Hey everyone,

I was hunting around for a thread where I could drop a question like this, but since I couldn't find anything quite right, I figured I’d just start a new one.
The title basically covers my main question, but I'll go ahead and lay it all out here—just to be safe. So, I'm running an ASUS B85M-K motherboard and
I'm planning on picking up a Samsung 250 GB 850 EVO SSD, specifically the MZ-75E250B/USA model, tomorrow. My big worry is whether the motherboard will actually support the drive... and if it does,
will everything just work smoothly without any weird hiccups? If anyone who knows their stuff could give me a solid answer, I’d really appreciate it—I'm definitely not looking to swap out the whole motherboard or anything like that 😁.

Best,

That SSD uses the standard SATA connection—just a data cable and power, really—so you shouldn't run into any issues getting it hooked up. Just one little thing to keep in mind: your motherboard has six SATA ports, but only four of them support 6Gb/s speeds, while the other two are limited to 3Gb/s. You should definitely check the motherboard manual to make sure you plug the SSD into one of those high-speed 6Gb/s ports. If you end up using a 3Gb/s port, the drive won't be able to hit its full speed potential, so just a tiny heads-up.

Thanks so much, and I really appreciate all the replies.
That last bit about the connectors was super helpful—honestly, I was wondering about exactly those kinds of details, so thanks for covering all the bases.
Just one quick follow-up: does an SSD pull a lot of power? Since you mentioned it's pretty similar to a traditional hard drive, I guess I'm just wondering if I need to worry about my power supply. Once I get home from work, I’ll check out exactly which unit I'm running and let you know so you can tell me if it'll be an issue.

It requires significantly less power than a traditional hard drive, so you really won't have anything to worry about regarding your power supply.

Make sure you switch your BIOS to AHCI mode before you even start installing the OS onto the Samsung SSD.
