Best music streaming platforms?

Major global players like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music have completely taken over the American market recently. It feels like streaming has become—well, basically the only way anyone listens to music these days. Because of that shift, I’m curious to hear where you all stand on the whole streaming phenomenon.

Are you currently using any of those major platforms? If you aren't using digital streaming services to listen to your tunes, what's the reason—and more importantly, how *do* you listen to music?

What is it about your preferred method that keeps you loyal to it instead of switching to something else?

Do you feel like streaming is actually affordable for the average user? And here's a bit of a controversial one—if you do think it's reasonably priced, do you believe downloading music illegally has become unnecessary? I mean, when you can access a massive catalog and listen to anything you want infinitely for just a few bucks, does the old way even make sense anymore?

I'm trying to settle a debate with myself here—which one of these three is actually the best: Spotify, Pandora, or Apple Music? I’m finally ready to pull the trigger on a premium subscription, but I really want to make sure I’m getting my money's worth... I need to know which one is actually going to justify its premium price tag in the long run...

Pandora actually sounds better than Spotify—plus you get lyrics and can actually track new releases by genre, which is huge

Now, don't get me wrong, Spotify has way more artists, a smarter algorithm, and their playlists are killer—super easy to navigate too. But there’s this one massive downside that drives me nuts: they don't push new albums to my feed like Pandora does. Instead, I just get flooded with random singles. It’s ridiculous! Even when I’m following an artist, I won't even get a notification about a full album release. Like, hello? Is anyone working there?

As for Apple Music, honestly, I have zero clue because I've never even touched it.

I don't know about Pandora; I just use Spotify and Apple Music. It's all pretty much the same to me.

I tried Amazon Music (Prime) too. It's decent enough, and it's cheaper.

I somehow ended up installing Spotify just so I’d have something to listen to during my morning walk to the office. Honestly, the sheer volume of music available on there is impressive, and so far, I haven't found anything to complain about.

In my experience, if you aren't dropping serious cash on a subscription, Spotify blows Pandora out of the water.

The only real headache with Spotify is the search bar. As soon as I start typing in artists, the whole app starts lagging like crazy, and then I’m stuck just waiting around before I can search for someone else.
But honestly, I mostly just use it to browse through artist profiles to see what they're up to. It's more about the info for me.

With Pandora, the ads were just relentless. It was constant, and there was this one specific, obnoxious loud ad that just wouldn't quit. It was driving me nuts.

When I'm vibing to music on Spotify, the ads are way less intrusive. They're actually quieter and somehow even tolerable, so they don't totally kill the mood while I'm listening.

Also, the playback logic is pretty smooth. If I search for something and hit play, once the album wraps up, it just rolls right into the next thing in the queue. But if I click a direct Spotify link for a specific release, it plays exactly that and stops dead after the last track. No extra fluff.

I think I might have accidentally signed up twice using two different email addresses. I'm not sure how, but even when I'm not logged in, I can still click a Spotify link for an album and listen to it without any issues.😕

For my music, I just stick to YouTube Vanced—it’s basically like having YouTube Premium without the monthly bill, plus it has some extra little perks that I love. My experience has been totally awesome so far.

YouTube Music is decent enough, I guess, but the library just doesn't feel as massive as what you get on Pandora.

I have it through Amazon Prime, too, but I haven't actually touched it yet. My Google account is tied to the US, so the app is geoblocked for me—it won't even let me download or install it.

Quick question for all you experts out there running YouTube Premium or Vanced...

So, here’s the deal. YouTube rolled out a relatively recent update, and it’s a bit of a headache. They completely changed how the artist and song titles appear when you select the "play video" option—shrinking the font size significantly and shoving everything up into the top left corner. It feels much more cramped than before.

Is there any way for me to revert this back to the old layout? Or even just customize the display of the artist and track names to suit my preferences? I'm wondering if using one of those advanced versions, like either Premium or Vanced, would give me that kind of control, or if I'm just stuck with their new design.

Plus, Spotify’s UI is way cleaner, especially on a phone. The "snaps" are great and having the lyrics right there is a huge plus.

You can actually make it stop. Just hit settings—you find that by clicking the little downward arrow next to your profile icon in the top right corner. Scroll down to autoplay and just toggle that switch off. 🎉

EDIT: I only use my laptop. My phone is basically a fossil at this point, and honestly, money is a bit tight right now, so I don't really need Premium. It’s not like it's expensive or anything, it's just not in the budget currently.

Is the premium subscription strictly through online banking??☕

Honestly, YT Music is just trash. If you actually take music seriously—I mean, if you aren't just looking for background noise while you wash dishes—it’s a total disaster. Pandora just charges my card once a month. It’s got its quirks and some albums are missing, but it's a solid way to build a reliable library with great sound quality and zero ads.

Has YouTube started restricting certain features exclusively to Premium subscribers now?

I'm currently using Apple Music, having made the jump over from Pandora thanks to that six-month free trial offer I'm still enjoying... honestly, it was such a killer welcome deal🙏. I’m actually thinking about sticking with it because, at the end of the day, the monthly subscription seems to be by far the most budget-friendly option out there

For me, price is really the deciding factor since most services are pretty much more or less the same, but Apple Music recently did a major overhaul and the interface looks fantastic now. It’s super smooth and makes pulling up lyrics so quick and easy, so I’m actually feeling a lot happier with it than I ever did with Pandora👍

The only thing making me second-guess things is considering a move over to Spotify for two main reasons;
1. Apple Music doesn't have the option to sync with Last.fm like I had back when I was on Pandora, and Spotify does support it (and I'm a bit obsessed with tracking what I listen to and how often, so that's a pretty big hurdle for me)
2. Spotify is basically the global heavyweight of streaming services, and it shows you those total play counts for songs—kind of like how YouTube shows view counts. Since I'm someone who follows the music scene pretty closely and likes to stay in the loop, having access to that kind of data is pretty interesting to me

I don't really use anything. Every time I open an app, it tries to shove something down my throat that I don't even want, when all I'm looking for is something specific. Honestly, Free Spotify is the absolute worst—sure, you might stumble upon some new bands, but that’s about it. Paying a monthly fee for Pandora or Spotify just isn't my vibe. If I'm not buying physical media, I just hit up Bandcamp; they usually have these 70% off deals going on, which I think is a total win.

I mostly just encode my own music, toss it on my phone, and call it a day. For mobile listening, VBR 160 MP3 is a total lifesaver. It doesn't hog storage and the quality is decent enough. When I'm back home, though, I'll fire up foobar2000 and listen to FLAC. You can definitely hear the difference in quality there, but try explaining that nuance to someone riding a crowded bus or a subway on their phone—you can't. And anyone claiming you can tell the difference on the go, no matter what headphones you're rocking, is tripping. First off, you actually need a decent amp or sound card to even touch the potential of FLAC. Without that, it's hard to distinguish 320kbps from FLAC, and honestly, most people wouldn't notice anyway. Usually, the real difference lies in the dynamic range if the mix is solid. It's that same thing where modern Vinyl releases, movies, and even video games give you options ranging from studio versions to "night mode" settings.
