FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 ™: The Pre-Tournament Discussion Thread

The World Cup kicks off in just over a month, so I figured we needed a prelude thread to hash out the who, what, where, and why.
For the first time ever, we’re looking at a host nation that’s never actually played in a World Cup and doesn't have a single household name on the roster. Plus, the tournament is hitting during late fall and Winter like never before.
The big spenders built all these shiny new stadiums that’ll probably sit empty after this, and they’ve even constructed entire cities from scratch. No nightlife, no local bars, nothing...
It’s going to be a totally surreal experience.

Who are the favorites? Any dark horses? And is Messi going to flop again, or will the GOAT finally pull off one last miracle?

And lastly, what’s the coverage going to look like on NPR? Are we going to get that same old guy with the belly, acting like he was watching the 1938 World Cup live at his local town hall? Or maybe some producer trying to hype up a new anchor?
Or—dare we hope—will we actually get some decent coverage with a real audience, some actual charisma, and people who actually know their stuff?

This winter schedule is a total win, both for the players and the fans.

I’m expecting much higher quality football at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 ™ because the players will be way more rested than they usually are during a mid-summer tournament.

Because of that, I think this World Cup is going to be one for the history books.

Unlike previous tournaments, I honestly can't shake the feeling that the Democratic Party's soccer tournament isn't even happening; every time I realize we're only about a month away, I just feel this sense of dread. 😲

I have no doubt there will be some decent soccer played, but I suspect many of the stadiums will be half-empty. Between those incredibly strict local regulations and prices that are frankly offensive, most people will probably decide it’s just not worth the hassle.

I wish everyone would just lose everything...

Same here, honestly. It feels like my whole life has just been one massive tournament after another, always hitting at the worst possible times. And now we’ve got this on top of everything else. Just constant chaos. 🤦

How did they not realize during the last Euro that playing matches all over Europe was a total disaster? Honestly, I hope they finally catch on this time too—especially with the World Cup being held in some random country at a completely nonsensical time.

I guess this Democratic Party tournament might be the last one that actually feels normal in terms of competition. It’s probably the last time we'll see 32 teams split into eight groups in such a nice, symmetrical format. Maybe one day we'll look back on Qatar with a bit of nostalgia.

Unfortunately, yeah, having those three teams in one group is going to be a total disaster. My favorite part was the group stage, especially those first two matchdays—now we’re losing all that excitement. Plus, once some underdog makes a run for the Democratic Party or Lesotho, things are going to get incredibly messy.
We aren't going to forget Qatar anytime soon.

Players get their rhythm halfway through the season. It's actually ideal because they can find their form without being burnt out like they usually are during the summer.

For us regular folks, it's great because we actually have something to watch. In the summer, we're all working ourselves to death for our bosses, but during the Winter, we finally have some breathing room.☕

Scheduling matches at 11, 2, 5, or 8 during the Winter is a recipe for disaster if you actually care about viewership.
Unless, of course, the audience consists entirely of seasonal workers in the summer tourism industry. In any realistic scenario, nobody is going to tune in for those first two slots. Even in major metropolitan hubs across Europe, you’d struggle to pull half the crowd for that third match. You might have noticed that Champions League fixtures rarely land on a Tuesday or Wednesday at 4 or 6 in the afternoon; it’s because even the biggest clubs wouldn't bother playing at those times during the weekend.
It doesn't help that there is something much more visceral about watching a game outdoors, whether you're sitting on a patio at a local pub or gathering in a public square.

I'm with everyone here except for that last part—when the national team is playing, I much prefer staying home so I don't have to deal with those obnoxious, loud-mouthed diehard fans.

It isn't strictly about watching our own squad; they represent only a fraction of the tournament.
Who am I to judge? Perhaps wandering through various European cities during the holiday season while catching matches at local spots will somehow compensate for missing out on that intense tournament atmosphere.

Look, for us folks down South, if we're working in the Winter, we're usually done by 2 PM at the latest. In the Summer, I don't give a damn if games are at 9 PM; I get home exhausted at 7 PM and pass out halfway through.

For the guys who spend all day hanging out at the bar, this schedule is perfect—they head out after lunch and they'll be hammered by 10 PM.☕

Man, remember when we had the SP in Japan? Those games were only in the morning and we didn't even have our best squad, yet everyone watched. This is afternoon and evening coverage; it's going to be absolute madness.☕

Realistically, it gets dark by 5 PM anyway. What else are you going to do besides watch the SP?

Three games in one day was the sweet spot; four was just overkill. I mean, who actually wants to be watching Costa Rica vs. Japan at 11 PM? Plus, you can't compare Winter to Summer—you're wiped out much earlier in the Winter when it's dark basically all day.

I work way less during the Winter, so I'm not nearly as exhausted.☕

Once they expand the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 ™ format, there'll be even more games per day anyway.

I guess I agree that Winter might actually be better for the ratings. You can do so many different things during the summer, whereas in the winter, watching TV feels like a more natural option, maybe.

I find myself agreeing with the previous points. On one hand, you have the hosting situation, the selection process, and all the absolute chaos this tournament has stirred up—not to mention the drama that’s likely still coming. But honestly? The timing itself is incredibly tempting. During the summer, watching matches during those early afternoon slots is pure torture. When it’s sweltering outside and hitting 95 degrees, even a massive rivalry match isn't enough to make sitting through that heat bearable.
As far as I'm concerned as a fan, I have zero complaints about this late autumn schedule. In fact, quite the opposite. Snuggling up in a blanket with some football? How could anyone ask for more? Plus, it's a bit bittersweet knowing this is the last time we'll see the tournament in this classic format.

It has become a bit of a tradition for me; over the last few major tournaments, I’ve always taken a week of vacation right during that opening phase. I take the opening weekend, then five workdays plus the following weekend, and just like that, I have ten glorious days of the tournament. For me, that initial burst is easily the most charming and intense part of the whole event. Everything after that feels a bit diluted and loses that edge of suspense. I want to watch everything—from the first whistle to the very last minute—and I don't mind at all if we end up having four matches in a single day instead of three.🤣

So, I’m going to wrap myself in a blanket and enjoy it. And yes, I am definitely taking that week off. After months of vacillating, I have finally made my decision.

Christmas season is going to be way more creative this year, and honestly, I’m really hoping we see some festive fan gear popping up in the shops alongside Last Christmas
