Printer recommendations (megathread)

Hey everyone... now that my kid is finally starting school, I need to grab a printer for those occasional assignments and printouts.

I've been looking at the HP Deskjet plus Ink Advantage 6075... is it actually worth the money?

From what I can see, the ink cartridges are running about $15 a pop...

I don't want to clutter things up with a new thread, so I figured I'd just ask here for some Best Buy printer recommendations

- mostly for office work
- maybe around 200 pages a month
- pretty much always printing in black and white
- looking for ink that's easy to find and cheap, I wouldn't mind using generics if they work okay

It would be nice if it had a scanner since I use one fairly often, though it's not a dealbreaker. Also, I'd prefer something that isn't a total beast taking up all my desk space, but I don't want to sacrifice features either. Noise levels and speed aren't really a big deal for me

- Needs a decent enough scanner to digitize my old stash of family photos
- Just some light printing here and there, maybe around 50 pages a month at most
- Mostly just black and white stuff

Also, it’s gotta run on my old 32-bit Windows 7 setup because I rarely touch my newer gear and honestly, I really don't feel like dealing with the headache of installing Windows 10 right now

Why go with inkjet? What’s the big deal with lasers? They’re actually pretty affordable these days.

Anyone know of a decent laser printer with a built-in scanner that won't break the bank, maybe something around $233?

I’m looking to pick up a printer for some home use and college stuff. Ideally, I need color printing, a scanner, duplexing, and Wi-Fi capabilities. My budget is sitting around $267. It would be a massive win if the thing doesn't freak out and refuse to work with third-party ink... I'm probably looking at printing about 100 pages a month.

I’m operating under the assumption that this is the appropriate forum for discussions regarding toner cartridges, isn't it?

I currently have an HP M283fdw sitting on my desk, and it has just informed me that one of my color levels is running dangerously low, which leaves me facing the inevitable task of deciding where and how to procure replacements. From what I can gather, the third-party compatible options available here in the States don't come with a chip included, and I see that the price for a W2210A (207A) is sitting at $67, while the high-capacity W2210X (207X) version is listed at $83. In your honest opinion, does that sound like a reasonable price to pay, or am I being overcharged? Furthermore, if anyone happens to know of a different website or perhaps a specific retailer where prices might be a bit more competitive, I would truly appreciate the recommendation.

For a long time, I've had this HP (not necessarily this exact model, just something in this vein). It cost me about $30 back when I bought it a decade ago, and it’s definitely seen better days. I want to upgrade to something more powerful and modern with more features. I'll be honest, I don't know much about technical specs, so any help would be appreciated.

I was looking at this one, also an HP. It seems to be hovering around $160 on most sites. The main thing that caught my eye is the photo printing capability. Does anyone here own it? Is the photo quality actually decent?
(I realize it won't match professional studio prints, but since I'm planning to make a ton of physical and digital albums, I just need it to look good enough for home use.)

Aesthetically, I'm not a huge fan of the design, but I see there are various models available (and different colors). I've been trying to read through the technical specs, but I can't quite figure out what the major differences are—specifically, if those differences actually matter for what I need or how much I'll end up paying. For instance, do I really need a fax function? Is it worth getting one just in case, or is that a waste of money? Also, what's the real difference between inkjet and laser? And will black and color ink cartridges for this specific printer be easy to find and reasonably priced?

What should I get if I want something high-quality that offers plenty of versatility?

My main priority is being able to print documents and anything else I need for work—black and white or in color. Photos are pretty much an afterthought. For size, I guess they’d be like standard snapshots you get from a studio; maybe something where I could fit a four-photo collage on an A4 sheet and just cut them out myself. I’m not entirely sure how that works.

I’d like decent quality, but nothing crazy or high-end. The real reason I’m looking for a new one is that my current setup is worn out; I need something faster and more modern. It’s just a basic home printer, but a nice little bonus would be being able to print a photo every now and then.

Honestly, I’m pretty clueless about all this. Even though I’ve been doing some reading, I’m totally open to any advice or recommendations you guys have.

With my current printer, I just hit “print,” the pages come out, and that’s the end of it. 😬 I don't buy ink, I don't swap cartridges, and I am completely lost when it comes to scanners, printers, faxes, and all that gear. I actually want to change that and finally learn how this stuff works, because I know it isn't rocket science.
