I found myself completely torn because we are dealing with films of nearly identical caliber; they obviously occupy different genre boundaries, yet it was a mere nuance that ultimately tipped the scales in favor of The Godfather and Brand—perhaps even your username played a part in that decision? 😁
If I were forced to select my top three films right this second, they would hail from entirely different countries and continents: Bresov's "Mouchette" (1967), Bogdanovichev's "The Last Picture Show" (1971), and Shindov's "Onibaba" (1964). It truly is a shame that some of those masterpieces weren't even in the running.
