Steve McQueen was truly one of the most charismatic actors to ever grace the screen. It strikes me as quite peculiar that people who claim to be cinephiles, or at least believe they possess a decent grasp of film history, often fail to recall his brilliant performances in such iconic classics as Butterfly, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, Bullitt, Tower of Hell, and Gambler from Cincinnati. Personally, I have always found his work in Sam Peckinpah's Champion of the Born and Escape to be his absolute finest.

Simon Signoret, happy birthday 🎉


Don't tell me you don't know Signoret. Shame on you. Anyone following American cinema knows her. I know there are plenty of cinephiles here, so why are you all avoiding this topic 😁? Which of her roles do you consider her best?

She was brilliant in Les Diaboliques. Especially that twist in the final 20 minutes. Then there's Melville's gem, The Army of Shadows, though Lino Ventura takes center stage there. She also appeared in The Confession by Costa-Gavras—personally, I think it's his best work, even better than Z. Yves Montand is in that one too, another great actor.

Her finest performance is in Becker's The Golden Helmet; she outshines any Hollywood starlet. Also an excellent role in La Ronde by the underrated Ophuls. I thought she starred alongside Gabin in something, but I can't recall which.

Come on, film buffs :klap: Signoret should be a household name to anyone paying attention to international cinema. If names like Renoir, Melville, or Godard are known to you, then Signoret, Gabin, and Delon should be just as familiar.

The Cat, starring Jean Gabin—honestly, such a great little flick. It’s basically just this old couple who can't stand each other anymore; he’s obsessed with his cat, and she absolutely loathes the thing because of it... Just a really solid little movie, and watching the two of them go at it is pure entertainment.

Nick Frost has always been solid. One of his best was in 'Spaced', then you have 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz'...

Diana Wiest is a great actress. 'Hannah and Her Sisters', 'Radio Days', and other Wudie's films. 'The Lost Boys', 'Parenthood'...

I don't really have anything to add to your posts, which is why I stay quiet. 😁I've always had a massive soft spot for her. It's hard to put my finger on exactly what kind of beauty she possesses—those wide, soulful eyes that seem to change color, paired with that natural blonde hair. She’s got that once-in-a-century kind of look, something truly rare, much like Faye Dunaway or Marlene Dietrich.

Out of all her later roles, I’d say the one in... Widow Couderc.

Looks like I missed a few days here, but I still wanted to drop in and wish a happy birthday to Stephen Dillane. He was solid as Stannis the Man in Welcome to Ottawa and played Leonard Woolf well enough in The Hours, but honestly, he completely stole the show for me playing Thomas Jefferson in that John Adams series... He just absolutely nails that role, so if you haven't seen it, you really should check out that series—it’s still available on HBO if you're looking for something to binge...

Yesterday marked the 82nd birthday of the legendary Julia Andrews. She’s basically an icon, whether you know her from "The Sound of Music" & "Mary Poppins" or if you grew up watching "The Princess Diaries" and "Shrek".

I’ve always been obsessed with the musical "Victor/Victoria", where she starred alongside the late James Garner & Robert Preston, all under the direction of her late husband, Blake Edwards. Honestly, that movie is top-tier. I can rewatch it anytime and it never gets old. 😍

It’s such a shame that back in 1997, she lost her singing voice after a routine vocal cord surgery. 😢 Julia - "Nobody Does It Better"

I really wish we could all team up and send a collective appeal to get this thread creator's permanent ban lifted. Someone on the forum told me you have to wait six months from the date of the ban before you can even request an appeal, which means the requirements for doing that are finally being met this month...

And let's not forget that Remam got banned over some PDF football stuff, which had nothing to do with the topics he’s actually known for, like movies. I mean, the horror movie threads have been at least 30 percent quieter since he was removed, just to show how much one person can impact certain subforums... I never got the vibe that he was spreading intolerance, unless you count his debating style being a little less subtle than what's allowed here.

Yeah, he's one of my favorite users here. He really made an impact, especially in the horror film section. From what I've gathered looking through the Banned Users Corner, people who get banned have to reach out themselves if they want back in... and then if they even get approved... honestly, I don't know the exact process, but I hope he comes back eventually. Maybe in a different capacity.

Why didn't he just come back under a different name a week ago when he was busy arguing about the new "golden age" of television?😁

I’m jumping in here to support the request to lift the ban on Remam. Honestly, the film community feels a bit empty lately; he used to spark such great discussions and really added something meaningful to the forum with his takes.

The Alien franchise has reached for the stars, and while the new generation knows it mostly because of Avatar, I still think there’s an actress in this series who gets way too little credit. At least, that's my take.
