Issues connecting PC to Smart TV wirelessly?

I own a smart TV, a General Electric "42PFL6007K/12" and I was actually planning to pick up some kind of adapter just to get my laptop screen to show up on the TV. However, a buddy of mine insisted—quite firmly, I might add—that I don't need to waste money on extra hardware since I already have a smart TV.
I spent some time digging through Google, trying to find a workaround, but I’m hitting a wall here. My first logical step was to get the TV hooked up to my home network. Just to clarify the setup: my router is sitting right there in the same room as the TV—no walls, no furniture, absolutely nothing blocking the signal.

Using the remote, I hit the home button, navigated over to smart TV , and then... nothing. The screen just goes black, and a message pops up saying “to connect this television to your home network, you will need a router and an Ethernet cable”. Below that, there's this blue bar just crawling back and forth—searching for a signal, I assume—and it's been sitting there spinning its wheels for ten minutes now with zero luck.

Honestly, I am completely baffled—why on earth is it telling me I need a physical cable when the whole point of a smart TV is to connect wirelessly?

Well, I use a similar General Electric smart TV myself. My process is pretty straightforward: I just head over to the HOME menu, select SMART TV, and then you see the main interface with the TV box icon in the center. Down at the bottom, you'll see various options like apps YouTube and things like that, along with an INTERNET icon. Once I click that, a new slide pops up offering different connection options. I just follow the on-screen prompts, and within two or three minutes, I'm fully connected to the Wi-Fi...

The issue I'm running into is that I simply cannot get past this initial setup phase—the connection step—because I've been sitting here for twenty minutes watching it struggle to connect to my router, which is practically right next to the Sony TV.
I honestly don't understand why it's insisting that I need an Ethernet cable when the wireless signal should be perfectly fine—it just doesn't make any sense to me.

Does your TV even have Wi-Fi built-in?

I'm not entirely sure if your TV has built-in Wi-Fi capabilities. It's possible you might need to pick up a Wi-Fi adapter, which usually isn't much more than $20. I remember having an old General Electric set that had wireless access, but only if you plugged in a specific adapter. Since the system is asking for a wired connection, your best bet is probably just to run an Ethernet cable from the router directly to the TV. That should hopefully clear everything up...

Of course there's Wi-Fi, what do you think this is, your living room?

As far as wireless goes, just try typing the IP directly into the TV. I once had to hardwire my PC straight to the set just so I wouldn't miss a single second of a football game while streaming.
