I’ve always had a soft spot for those little emojis... 😁
But honestly, seeing them all over my Facebook feed is getting exhausting.
To me, it just feels like people are running out of actual words to say.

Well, you definitely wouldn't be voting for this Nevin or my little suggestion about having 15 emojis per post 😍 😬 πŸ˜‚

πŸ™‚ no way.....
Don't get me wrongβ€”emojis aren't inherently bad. Digital screens feel pretty sterile, and if you tell someone to "get lost" without adding a little smiley face at the end, they might take it much harder than you intended. In that sense, emojis are actually useful tools to prevent misunderstandings.
The problem is that people often lean on them just to mask a limited vocabulary. Pictures can convey just as much weight as words, right?

If you look at it that way, even the ellipses people leave behind actually carry weight. All those little punctuation marks are essentially visual substitutes for something else. Ellipses, dashes... they act as a pause in thought, or maybe they’re just a way to signal a mood, depending on what's being discussed.

Some people gravitate toward images, others prefer words. Who knows? Maybe one day I'll stumble upon a musical score posted here too...

I still can't stand him πŸ™‚

Oh, you caught me in my own trap 😁

It also reminded me of something else that's been bothering me latelyβ€”it isn't directly related to the topic, but it's worth mentioning anyway.
It's this complete Americanization of our speech. And I don't mean slang or casual banter; I mean formal language, especially what you hear on TV.

Why does it always have to be "make up" instead of makeup? "Stage" instead of stage? "Friend" instead of friend?
I get that some things just don't translate perfectly, but when I'm watching an American news network like ABC and I hear something like, "In our next celebrity report, we'll see makeup artists preparing stars for their appearance on stage," it makes my skin crawl.

And one more thingβ€”this unnecessary obsession with using the "&" symbol (and).
For instance, in a segment on CNN or the New York Times called Home & Garden -> Home and Garden. It's just nonsense. We have the word "and" for a reason.
I see that "&" everywhere lately, and honestly, it's driving me absolutely insane.

Pro πŸ˜‚

It just occurred to me that there’s something else that bothers me. It isn't directly related to the topic, but still...

🍿 Can this thread just become a place to vent about everything that bugs us? 😍

It’s total Americanization of our speech. And I don't mean slang or casual talk, but official languageβ€”especially on TV news.

Hahaha, you're just like my Friend!

But yeah, that gets to me too. A little bit...
Even things like saying "stage" instead of the actual word, or "makeup," or even just how frequentlyβ€”if not constantlyβ€”English words get shoved into sentences.

Like: "Wait, why on earth are you using so many ellipses? Like, really?!" 😬

Why does it have to be makeup instead of cosmetics? Stage instead of the theater? Friend instead of a companion?

Sometimes I feel like people are actually embarrassed to say certain words. Like they aren't "cool" enough. For example, I'm using an anglicism right now 🀣
But some of them are already so ingrained in daily conversation that it's basically impossible to root them out 😍

Just tilting at windmills... πŸ™‚

I get that some things can't be translated, but when I hear someone on ABC say something like: "In our next showbiz report, we'll see makeup artists preparing celebrities for their appearance on stage," it makes my skin crawl.

Jesus, that word "celebrity" sounds so pretentious to me. I can practically picture the news anchor saying it perfectly 🀣

One more thingβ€”the unnecessary use of the ampersand symbol ("&").
For instance, in the Morning or Evening editions of Home and Garden -> Home and Garden. It's just silly. We have the word "and" for a reason.
I see that "&" everywhere, and honestly, it really gets under my skin.

That bothers me too, πŸ™‚, mostly because it’s just aesthetically ugly πŸ₯³ 😁

It also drives me crazy when I see these wanna-be columnists who attach negatives directly to verbs, or things like... πŸ€”
Writing "jel" instead of "is it," along with all those other little idiocies I can't even think of right now πŸ™‚

Oh, right! 😬 This "wanna-be" thing is an actual expression. A phrase that can be perfectly sarcastic if used correctly 😍 I mean, sometimes you just have to say it

Honestly, I find it absolutely repulsive πŸ˜›
It just feels depressing, listless, completely shut down, and there's a whole laundry list of other things I can't stand about it 😍

Or maybe it's even worse than that! πŸ˜‚

It totally reminds me of... Steve from... Malcolm in the Middle... 😳😳

And I seriously can't deal with people who, even if you ignore all that other stuff , insist on putting way too many periods in their sentences

God, just seeing this thread pop up is making me feel depressed...
La la la la πŸ™‚

Negooo... Is it just me getting worked up here, or is it actually... popcorn:

🍿 Can we just make this thread about everything that gets under our skin? 😍

Brilliant. πŸ™‚
Here are a few more pet peeves for the pile.

Instead of bakeries, or even better, local shops, everywhere I look I see this nonsense word "pekarna"β€”a term that doesn't even exist in the American dictionary (at least as far as I'm concerned).
In Finland, they actually have laws that penalize spelling errors on public signage, posters, and so on. Honestly, I'm all for it, because it affects everyone who has to walk past them and read them. If that were the case here, 90% of our local bakeries would be slapped with a fine and forced to change their signs immediately.

And don't even get me started on sports broadcasts or news articles; I constantly see things that drive me up the wall, specifically when people slap the prefix "most" onto words that are already superlatives.

For instance, saying something is "most dominant" or "most ideal."
The other day, I saw a headline on Index that read "FC Barcelona was more dominant than Real Madrid." What is that supposed to mean? That Real Madrid was dominant, but Barcelona was somehow... "more" dominant? It makes zero sense.

I seriously have to wonder if they're even hiring actual journalists anymore, or if journalism schools even offer courses like "Basics of American language" or "Culture of American language" or anything of the sort. The mistakes these reporters makeβ€”when language should be their primary tool and weaponβ€”are absolutely egregious.

It affects all of us who have to walk past them and read them. If we had that here, about 90% of our local bakeries would be getting slapped with fines and forced to redo their signs immediately.

I get where that's coming from, I really do, but language is this living, breathing thing that’s constantly shifting. Words die out, others morph, new ones just pop up out of nowhere. If you try to freeze everything in place, we’d probably end up losing entire letters altogether. Take me, for exampleβ€”I can't be bothered with accents, and I'm definitely not typing out things like "tch" or whatever...😁

vhrkac said:we joined the EU... no more expats leaving for work... haha... now we're all under the same roof... hehe

you can leave the small town, but you can't leave the small-town mindset behind... and that's just how it is...----
and my relatives have already moved out, while others are heading out this August...
but now people only ask how things are going in America since we joined the EU...
not much changed, man... it's the exact same as before...

ps... they went to the coast to annoy the locals by complaining about how expensive everything is, saying back home in Germany it’s much better...
though everything here revolves around extremes... because I know, having been an expat myself, I've seen plenty of it over there...
not just our people, but other groups too...
for instance, I went to school with two guys from Turkey who were only 16 and had never even been to a big city in Turkey until they moved to Germany...
they showed up and were immediately thrown into our school... they were 16 and we were all only 12 or 13... you wouldn't believe the difference... they were already shaving while we were still using markers to draw on our faces...
.....
that's how most of our expats left for good (including my grandfather and uncles back around '69 or '70 when everyone was moving abroad en masse)...
and during the war (when I was around)...
you see a lot of things over there...
the worst ones are the most backward people from the rural areas...

that's why I wrote earlier that you can escape the small town, but the small town stays in you... with all due respect to the hardworking folks in the countryside who live on their land and provide honestly for their families...
because there's a massive difference between being a farmer and being a hillbilly... there's actually a great comparison online if you Google it...

this is getting a bit off-topic, but...
my younger cousin is still bitter to this day toward my wife because he wore a rosary around his neck and when she asked him if he wanted to come to Mass with us on Sunday... he said, "I believe in God, but not the church"... especially not these thieves here who just want my twenty bucks... so my wife told him if that's how he feels, he shouldn't be wearing the rosary... we haven't spoken properly since then, three years ago... and every year he's stuck in our house for at least two weeks...
it's the same guy who, when they visit, won't take off those cargo shorts, Crocs, and straw hats... but as long as he can brag about having a new iPhone 4... "geil gel"... while I just calmly pull out my Galaxy S4... and he just stares like an idiot...
....
otherwise, he's fine... it's just... over there, where the weather is wild, they act normal, but once they come back here, they love to show off... it's the same when we go somewhere else... thinking America is the best and everything here is perfect...
but the truth is something else entirely...πŸ˜‰

we laugh at the expats, but the EU doesn't accept us and never will... because I'm often in Canada for work and there's always a crowd of foreign license plates in front of the Lidl, tourists traveling to the American coast who still shop at Lidl and Aldi because they think we don't have those things here... they're afraid of us, and honestly, they're afraid in their own countries too...

haha...hehe πŸ™‚

Cut those damn little details.

At least it’s a size 5. Small wins, I guess. 🀣

Honestly, those little dots don't bother me one bit. What actually gets under my skin are the people who find something to complain about in every single thing. Especially the ones fighting for their own little slice of the pie while simultaneously trash-talking stuff someone else actually cares about. It’s just exhausting. πŸ˜πŸ€£πŸ˜‚πŸ€·β˜•

Those three little dots are absolute goldβ€”just like this line --------------||----------------- underneath. Using these symbols is such a massive time-saver, and honestly, time is money, money is paper, paper comes from trees, and trees give us oxygen...
