So, I’m sitting here trying to reply to someone via DM, and it’s just... stuck. I can't even send the message because their inbox is completely maxed out.

Is there any way you guys could bump up the message capacity?

Or maybe just throw in some kind of alert—like a little icon or a notification—that's actually obvious enough to let someone know they're running dangerously low on space...

...if you ask me, the message storage limit is honestly way too massive,
and once a user finally hits that capacity limit,
they just get an automated email notification saying they won't receive any more private messages until they clear out some space...
(though that really depends on how you have things configured in your settings)

(assuming you have it set up that way in the settings)

Is there any way to make old messages auto-delete? Like, could we set it so when a new one comes in, the oldest one just disappears automatically?

So, what you're saying is if someone hits a hundred messages, we just automatically wipe out all their saved private messages—including the ones with photos of the forum ladies' chests? 😁

A hundred messages is more than enough, honestly. If someone actually cares about their inbox, they have plenty of opportunities to keep it organized and usable. On the flip side, let's be real—we all know people who intentionally stuff their inbox to full just so they have an excuse to block anyone trying to send them new messages.

A hundred messages is plenty. If someone actually gives a damn about their DMs, they can manage their inbox well enough to keep it usable. Then again, we all know some people intentionally clog up their inbox just so they have an excuse to block anyone trying to send them new messages.

Hold up, if someone’s inbox is totally maxed out, does that mean the admins can't even send them a ban notice?

But I suppose that doesn't actually prevent someone from getting banned 😁

Users who have been banned from the site can't access their private messages.

Even though I could just go into my settings and turn off private messages entirely if I wanted to. 😁

I can do that.

The way it works is—well, they still end up getting an email notification letting them know exactly who was trying to slide into their inbox in the first place.

Why not bump the message limit up to 125? Every other forum I hang out on has a way bigger capacity than this one.
If it’s just a server space issue, then never mind.

If they bump that limit up to a thousand, we’re right back to square one where people who don't constantly clear out their inboxes won't be able to receive any messages at all when the time comes.
It’s honestly bizarre how nobody seems to bother setting up those massive 40-liter mailboxes in front of their houses anymore, isn't it?

Funny how nobody mentions why they don't just install massive 10-gallon mailboxes at their houses then??

I clear my inbox constantly, but honestly? The sheer volume of junk I get is getting ridiculous.
Bottom line, I don't see any reason not to increase the limit (unless we're actually running out of server space), especially since 500 private messages is pretty much the industry standard on most forums.

Why don't you just save the ones you actually care about onto your computer?

It’s the same question as why I don't download every single email I want to keep. :P

Because I trust the server way more than my own hard drive. 🙂

My inbox was full one day—only about 100 messages, really—and some user on a thread told me they were trying to DM me but couldn't.
So, I cleared out my inbox a bit.

Since I don't check my email for days at a time, I only realized a few days later that Reddit had sent me a notification to clear my inbox.

I guess I didn't realize that was even necessary. 🤷

Has anyone else actually gotten an email from Reddit like that?

That’s just an automated notification sent to everyone.

Really?
I guess I'm just sitting here thinking, "So much for privacy." 😂

Anyway, I never expected much anonymity on a site like Reddit...
