M83
THE FILLMORE
TUESDAY, JUNE 5, 2012
M83—that massive musical project led by French-American artist Antony Gonzalez—is hitting The Fillmore this Tuesday, June 5th.
Right now, they might just be the biggest name on the indie electro scene. Instead of just being a studio project, M83 is coming to Chicago as a full-blown live band on a tour promoting their killer last album, "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming," which dropped last year. In an era where everyone is ditching albums for EPs and singles, Gonzalez had the guts to drop a double album that basically crushed it, sitting at the top of pretty much every "best of 2011" list out there. Most notably, Pitchfork ranked it as the #3 album of the year. That same outlet also crowned "Midnight City," the lead single from the record, as the best song released in 2011.
The news of M83 landing in Chicago comes right as the band is caught between sets at this year's Coachella, just a few days after they were confirmed for Lollapalooza. This Chicago date is actually one of the first stops on their European tour, arriving at The Fillmore just a couple of days after playing Coachella in Los Angeles. It’s pretty obvious: this isn't a band on the rise or a band on the way out. They are at their absolute peak, riding high on a phenomenal new album and crushing it at the world's biggest festivals.
To make things even better, Chicago will be one of the rare cities to get the full club experience with the band's performance on Tuesday, June 5th.
Named after the spiral galaxy Messier 83, M83 was founded back in 2001 in France. They really started catching the eyes of fans and critics with their second album, "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts," which kicked off a massive world tour. To date, the group has put out six studio albums, done remixes for Placebo, Goldfrapp, Bloc Party, and plenty of others, and toured alongside heavyweights like Kings of Leon, The Killers, and Depeche Mode.
