I’ve been observing a staggering volume of grievances regarding moderation decisions and perceived injustices concerning our "disciplinary guidelines" here on the forum.
It strikes me that there might be a straightforward solution capable of satisfying all parties involved in these disputes, effectively relieving both the users and the moderators of this persistent friction and frustration.

We should grant the original poster the autonomy to moderate their own threads.🙂

I am curious whether the technical infrastructure of this platform allows for the activation of such "self-moderation" features.

However, I am even more intrigued by the following, framed perhaps as a psychological experiment:
If such a feature is technically unfeasible, would you—as moderators or as fellow community members—actually desire it, and do you believe it would serve as the optimal way to ensure a free "flow of thoughts and ideas" within this forum?🙂

Have you actually seen this kind of idea being used in practice? Because I have, and let me tell you, it’s a total disaster. The number of complaints just skyrockets by like 500x.

There are plenty of forums out there that have already tried implementing this, and it's a complete non-starter—feel free to go check them out for yourself if you don't believe me.

Right, because if you don't jump through all their hoops, they just slap you with a warning for trolling.

This is easily one of the absolute worst ideas I’ve encountered in my eight years on this forum (though I’m willing to give the OP the benefit of the doubt regarding their intentions). It’s almost too easy to sit back and map out all the ways this could go horribly wrong.

What could possibly go wrong? Nobody would even be complaining. 😁

I can already see it happening: some young Republican Party member starts a thread about the party or Kamala Harris, only to immediately scrub every single negative comment—unless, of course, it’s just some mindless, baseless nonsense. 🤣

I honestly think we should set some clear moderation rules. It would be a lot better if mods didn't have to rely on their "gut feeling" to make calls.

Look, this idea popped up here a few years ago, so it’s definitely not anything new. Back then, though, it was presented much more seriously and with actual arguments—not just this "OMG, great idea!" vibe. Could it work? Sure, it could be great! But it runs into the exact same issue we have with current moderation: subjectivity and being stubborn. At the end of the day, the problem isn't how we maintain order—it's the people in charge.

So, what you're saying is the forum would actually be a better place if there were just no people on it at all?
damn them, they're nothing but a bunch of absolute idiots making things up as they go along.

Nah, listen, the forum would be way better if we just didn't have all these idiots hanging around.

Back then, though, it was presented with much more depth and actual substance. It wasn't just this sudden, impulsive "wow, great idea!" kind of vibe. I think the system itself could work quite well, but it faces the exact same hurdles our current moderation team deals with—namely, subjectivity and being overly rigid. At the end of the day, the issue lies with the people involved, rather than the method of enforcement itself.

Does anyone have a link to where that was posted? I'd love to see the reasoning behind it.

Honestly, my sympathies go out to anyone who actually had the guts to hand out permanent bans to certain people back in the day.

I mean, honestly—I’m assuming it was brought up here on the local board. And if my memory serves me right, you should be looking for the user cp.tar.
If you can't be bothered to search, you could always just ask an admin directly. 😁

Actually, I was complaining about the folks who let just anyone moderate and then leave their nonsense all over the forum. No worries though! 🥳

I would argue that allowing authors to moderate their own threads is generally a bad idea. However, this reminded me of a concept I proposed once: creating a specific sub-forum where users could start their own topics and act as their own moderators. This idea came to me after seeing "welcome PDFs" on other forums, where someone starts a thread to introduce themselves, others welcome them, and eventually, it evolves into a dedicated chat group.
Another reason this occurred to me is that there is a gap between our two current paradigms: we have topical discussions where chatting is prohibited, and then we have public chats open to everyone. What is missing are "private" or small-group chats—spaces where a specific group can hang out without the risk of getting a warning for off-topic posting, or feeling forced to interact with crowds they don't necessarily click with in the public channels.
At the moment, there isn't as much demand for these small group chats as there was when I first thought of this. A few groups have formed spontaneously in different sections and migrated to the general lounge areas, but I still believe having such a dedicated corner on the forum would be a solid idea.
That is what I remembered. As for the suggestion to allow authors to moderate their own threads everywhere, I vote against it.

Sorry for going off-topic—but Zachary Mendoza2, don't get mad at me! It’s actually written sve, not svih. You know, because of the genitive case—"of whom? of what?"—and all that stuff, right?

I can handle those things if I really put my mind to it, but in a normal conversation, I’m practically illiterate. I don't think there's much to be done about it; even when I try to speak or type properly, there's always a mess of grammar, typos, and other mistakes. That’s just how I am. 🤷

Is this what you mean:
Zachary Mendoza2 said:there are other chats that are public for everyone.

That's the accusative case—referring to whom or what the chats are for; for all the frogs, people, robots in this world, for all of us, for me, for you, for them, for everyone.
I have no idea if it should be everyone or all; it seems to depend on whether we are talking about people or things, or living vs. non-living. Only an expert would know; I'm not sure 😳

That’s hardly an excuse—really. 🙂 We should be aiming for something much better than this.

I understand, but grammar and spelling aren't my top priority; they never seem to make the list. Please refresh the page, I edited the post. If you were referring to what was written above, I believe it should be all rather than every. I am not entirely certain, though. 🤷
In my own logic, it would be for all of us/you/them or simply for everyone, not even for all of us as I usually write it, so I am clearly mistaken somewhere. 😵

Brian Edwards78 said:No, buddy, this forum would be significantly better off without idiots.

/stares at the ceiling and sighs/

It’s possible it would be better—likely, even—but it certainly wouldn't be more interesting.
And it would probably end up feeling a bit empty...
