Is there any training available in the US that actually leads to a personal trainer certification?

The law doesn't actually specify who is eligible to perform this kind of work professionally. You can find information on advanced coaching certifications through major universities with kinesiology programs—just give them a quick search online.

If your goal is just coaching recreational athletes, you don't need advanced certifications. Basic theoretical knowledge from standard textbooks, combined with solid results and field experience, will get the job done.
However, if you want to play in the big leagues, formal education isn't optional—it's mandatory. Short-term workshops won't cut it; working with serious athletes requires deep, foundational expertise.
In today's landscape, a coach who also understands sports nutrition holds a massive competitive edge over everyone else.
