I think we actually need a dedicated thread for this. Someone already pitched a similar idea over on the Martial Arts PDF.

I've been lurking and posting here for a long time now—just curious, what do you all actually do for a living? I’m talking about both the regulars and the occasional posters. Does anyone here actually find success in their field, or is it all just talk?
Let’s be real—most people hanging out here aren't exactly gym rats by default. It might actually be worth pivoting the vibe a bit to make the forum more welcoming for people into other stuff.

Maybe it’s worth doing a quick rundown of everything you guys have been up to—though honestly, focusing on the present might be more useful. It wouldn't hurt to throw in some thoughts on what all those different moves actually meant to you, too.

---------------

Alright, I'll kick things off.

29 years old—just a single woman.

Been off the Bujinkan Bruce Lee grind for most of three years now—mostly just massive gaps in training. My only real goal at this point? Finally grinding out that 10th kyū. I just want that green belt on my waist.
I hit the gym maybe four to eight times a month—nothing crazy. Just low-intensity stuff like light squats, core work, back, chest... that kind of thing. I’m not out here trying to set powerlifting records or chase massive weights. Honestly? I just want to stay solid and keep my spine from falling apart.
Just your average commuter—mostly just pedaling from point A to point B around town most days. Nothing crazy.

Spent years doing step aerobics and Tae Bo—anyone else actually remember that craze? 😁A year and a half rowing in college leagues—plus a year total doing ki-aikido and kenjutsu.

Your turn. 🙂

background: blue belt in Shotokan karate, volleyball
current status: just a passionate fitness enthusiast (I hit the gym daily—lots of circuit training, Tae Bo (yep, I still do that 😁!), step aerobics, and cycling, mostly on the weekends). I had to take a break from running due to an injury (I actually made it all the way to 9.9 miles), but I’m finally getting back into the groove now.
Out of everything, my absolute favorites have to be running, biking, and those intense workouts.

Early twenties, female

I started out with ballet before switching over to tennis, then spent some time hitting the gyms until I basically grew to hate them... this winter I've been doing a bit of boxing, but it’s getting way too hot now so I'm just rolling through some yoga sessions, though running and swimming in the summer are pretty much my only constants

I wouldn't say I'm exactly consistent with any one sport, but I definitely stay active

Just another face in the crowd 🙂

Age: 33, Male

Back in elementary school, I spent some time playing chess, though most of those strategies have slipped my mind by now. In high school, I did karate, and I’ve pretty much been a hiker at heart for as long as I can remember. About five years ago, I decided to get back into a real fitness routine; I started out hitting the gym and then spent a few years doing jazz dance. Somewhere along the line, I picked up a bike and started tackling the hills around my local area, which has become my main obsession alongside the occasional game of badminton and some rollerblading. A few days ago, I actually gave bouldering a shot, though I was absolutely terrible at it 😬. 🙂

Oh, and I’ve also been playing bridge about once a week for the last three or four years.

Smith, turning 28 soon, male specimen.
I’ve been hiking on and off for about 16 years now, though I’ve really ramped things up over the last year. Personally, I don't consider hiking a "sport" since there isn't much of a competitive edge to it, but it’s an incredible way to stay active—it helps me keep the weight off and, frankly, gives me better legs than half the girls at my university.
I don't pay much attention to my diet, which is a massive passion of mine but also my biggest weakness, but I just burn off the calories through training.
I have a thing for thin girls and wouldn't mind if coppernomad44 became my girlfriend. 🙂

I wouldn't call myself a regular around here, but whatever...

I'm a woman, and my age is right there on my profile.

Back in the day, I was a competitive swimmer.

Then I moved into track and field, sticking with it for ten straight years.
I even competed for Team USA a few times. Eventually, I just quit because my motivation hit rock bottom. Honestly, it was because of how "the higher-ups" treated those of us who actually put in the blood, sweat, and tears. Plus, I couldn't stand all the political games being played by people within the sport; it just stripped away any sense of integrity.

After that, I spent some time riding horses and scuba diving recreationally.

Nowadays, I enjoy hiking and cycling every now and then. I'm also hoping to get some decent experience with skiing, rollerblading, and maybe even ice skating down the road. 🙂

45 years old, male, and pretty sure I’m the oldest guy on this board—at least for now.

Back in elementary school, I played some chess, though I wasn't exactly winning any trophies.

Spent my younger years dealing with a bit of alcohol and way too many cigarettes.

Picked up running about 12 years ago.
Since then, I've knocked out 16 marathons, around 50 half-marathons, and a ton of smaller races.
Three years back, I dove into swimming (did one marathon swim), mountain biking (hit a few MTB marathons, most recently one in a Small town in Ohio this past Sunday), and finally jumped into triathlons about two years ago.

As for what's next? My big goal is to gift myself an Ironman for my 50th birthday.

45-year-old male.

Back in high school, I was pretty serious about rowing—during the season, I’d put in a couple of hours every day, sometimes even twice a day. In college, I hung out at the club gym a bit and used my bike as my main way to get around. Then came about 20 years of long workdays fueled by office snacks and beer, which eventually landed me at 350 lbs two years ago.

Lately, I’ve been watching what I eat, walking more, and using my bike for commuting again. It helped me drop a good amount of weight, and it actually brought my blood pressure and sugar levels back down to a healthy range.

My goal now is just to maintain this, and maybe tone up a little over the next year (you know,
pushups and stuff like that).

My motto: steady progress within reasonable limits.

Just your average weekend warrior. Hitting the gym twice a week. Mostly doing abs, stretching, endurance stuff... plus I do about an hour at home three times a week, mostly just to keep my lower back from giving out, though it helps with other things too. 😁 Oh yeah, I live in a city by the Mississippi River, so once swimming season kicks off, I'm out there regularly. Honestly could do it in the winter, but I'm just not a pool guy.

Tennis on the side. Used to play more often, but now I'm trying to talk my buddies into hitting the courts at least once a week again.

Edit:

30M - I guess these are just some stats

I played basketball back in elementary school, then moved on to cycling, running, and high jump during my middle and high school years😬. At college, I did swimming and water polo, and lately, I’ve gotten back into distance running. About six years ago, I dabbled in rock climbing, though honestly, I spend more time lecturing the kids on technique than actually climbing myself—so I'm hardly a pro or anything.

49 and a half years old. In my younger days, 😁 boxing was my true passion—I trained and competed heavily. Later on, I moved into running, swimming, cycling, and even dabbled in triathlons back when I had more stamina. Mostly outdoor endurance sports.
My tally includes 4 marathons, one half-Ironman, 10 half-marathons, and several shorter distance triathlons. Currently, I teach at the university's kinesiology department.
For my 55th birthday? An Ironman, obviously.

Back in the day, she used to crush long swims, and she spent her free time just riding her bike for the pure soul of it.

I'm back to running lately—well, more like easing my way back in after a nasty injury. On the weekends, I've been getting out on my road bike, hitting the pool, working with kettlebells, and getting pretty serious about hiking.
The goal is simple: knock out a marathon, crush an ultra, and cross that Ironman finish line all before I hit 40.

Male, just hit my 26th birthday today.

I’ve been staying active since I was maybe 12 or 13—it’s been a long time, honestly. Back then, I was just doing squats, push-ups, and sit-ups at home, using those old-school chest expanders. I eventually joined a local gym when I was around 15 or 16 🤷 where they focused heavily on bodybuilding, but I never really vibed with that whole bulky, puffed-up bodybuilder look. Not long after that, I bought some weights for my house and started digging deeper, trying to figure out how to actually build strength rather than just looking big. As I got older, I really started to hone in on what I wanted for my physique while soaking up everything I could about training. Once I started college, I began experimenting with advanced calisthenics and incorporated Pavel's methods (seriously, if you're a hobbyist or an athlete, Pavel Tsatsouline's books are absolute must-reads). Eventually, I found my way to gymnastics, which I've been practicing for about a year and eight months now.

On top of all that, I’m a huge martial arts enthusiast. I trained Wing Chun for two years, and late last year, I started getting into MMA. I had to put that on hold recently because things are a bit tight financially, but I'm planning to get back into it as soon as I possibly can.

My ultimate goal is to one day pull off those insane gymnastics moves that seem impossible to anyone who isn't a professional.🙂

Male, 24 years old

Growing up, I was super active—did karate for a while and played soccer through most of high school (honestly, pretty much everyone did back then, right?).
After that, I dabbled a little bit in some Dennis Survival Ju-Jitsu.

Nowadays, my routine is a mix of hitting the gym, rushing home to crush some kettlebell swings, jumping rope, and getting my runs in.
Blah blah blah...

I've been doing Taekwondo for about six years now—it's pretty much the only thing I've ever actually stuck with 😁 other sports just never really did anything for me, honestly. Btw, I'm at red belt right now, but I'm planning to test for my black belt next year 🎉

Male, 29 years old.

I grew up playing basketball, then moved on to some casual soccer, but once I hit college, I became absolutely obsessed with tennis.
After spending maybe three or four years just running myself ragged—only to realize my lower back was a total mess—my doctor basically told me to get into the weight room about three and a half years ago. So, I started lifting.
Fast forward to six months ago: I picked up running again (though right now I’m stuck dealing with a nasty hamstring strain), and now I’m looking for someone decent to hit the court with for some tennis matches.

I played volleyball until I was 18, then switched to basketball. I was pretty intense about it, which basically just meant I absolutely trashed my ankles.

Eventually, I quit the organized stuff and just played hoops around town for a bit.

Then, for like two or three years, I did almost nothing. But lately, I’ve been hitting the elliptical and actually trying to learn something about nutrition.

Tried getting into kickboxing, but honestly, I can't keep up with the schedule.

Goal: get back in shape.

So yeah, current status: total amateur.

edit: started riding a bike recently, and I've been doing some recreational scuba diving for a couple of years now.

I grew up doing rhythmic gymnastics, then moved on to tennis...
After high school, I started hitting aerobic classes on and off. Once the weight started creeping up, I jumped right back into aerobics, which I still do today to keep everything under control... Is that enough?😁
