So... here is my situation. I am a very light sleeper and it takes me forever to actually drift off. Usually, I share a room with my brother, who snores just enough that I can finally pass out if I have my earplugs, a good pillow, and the right position set up. That is, unless he has a cold—then the snoring gets so bad I don't fall asleep until 3:00 AM.

The issue is that I have to be up by 6:30 AM. My grandmother is coming to stay, and she will be sleeping in my room. She doesn't just snore; her snoring is so loud the walls practically shake. My usual tricks won't work this time. I simply cannot sleep when someone is snoring near me. I might manage ten minutes of rest here and there, but that is about it.

To make matters worse, I have finals all next week. I am feeling quite lost. Should I try to pull all-nighters and then drink coffee before class and nap for three hours in the afternoon? Or should I just lie in bed at night? Would even lying there provide any actual rest? Please, I am desperate for any advice you can offer. 😢 😢 😢

Also, if anyone happens to know how to use makeup to hide tired eyes, I would truly appreciate the help.

Maybe just flip your schedule around. Study at night and catch up on sleep during the day when you don't have anyone snoring in your ear. 🙂

I wish I could swap places with my mom or dad for a bit! At least then someone would actually be listening to Grandma
Maybe move her into the living room?
How is that even possible given the layout of the house

My daughters share a room, and during finals week—even though their schedules don't overlap—they always end up dragging me into their drama. They'll stay up studying all night, so one wants total silence to focus while the other just wants to sleep peacefully!

I’m pretty much a light sleeper myself—honestly, if a floorboard creaks or a car drives by outside, I’m wide awake. But then there are those stretches in life where my sleep schedule just goes completely haywire; I'll wake up way earlier than usual and there is absolutely zero chance of drifting back off. It doesn't happen all the time, though. I can't really offer much in the way of expert advice, but if it were me? I'd probably try rearranging the bedroom layout or just toss the whole lot out the window. 😂

First off, if your brother and grandmother are snoring that loudly, they really ought to go see a doctor to figure out if there's an underlying medical issue at play. It could very well be sleep apnea. In many cases, you can actually mitigate or even eliminate snoring entirely just by losing some weight, switching to sleeping on your side, or trying specific therapeutic treatments.

Personally, I’m on board with what melloworca6 suggested. That was pretty much my entire modus operandi back when I was in college. You have a massive amount of students who pull all-nighters to study and then try to crash during the day. The real struggle is conditioning your body to that rhythm, especially when you're forced to wake up early for classes...

Just grab some earplugs and call it a day. Seriously, man—you’re gonna be sleeping next to a total snorer... 🙄

The thing is, earplugs aren't exactly a miracle cure. Even then, I can still hear it when the snoring is just light, let alone when it gets heavy >< I try changing them out frequently, pushing them in deeper, but the sound still manages to get through...

Plus, those earplugs give me a massive headache 😳—it’s not like they’re meant to be worn all night long while you sleep.

I’ve been sleeping with earplugs for years now. Every single night. It’s been at least five years at this point.

And honestly, once I finally found the right ones, everything just goes silent... my boyfriend—who snores, sometimes pretty loudly—the lawnmowers outside my window, some loud music coming from the neighbors upstairs... nothing gets through.

Ever since I found a decent pair, I don't hear a thing once they are in. My boyfriend snores—sometimes quite loudly—the lawnmower outside my window, the loud music from the neighbors upstairs... nothing.

Which ones do you use? lol. I grab those yellow silicone foam ones, sort of spongy. I think those are really the only kind they carry at the local CVS.👎

Sometimes my ears ache just when I take them out, and I end up scratching them. But I suppose that is a small price to pay if it means actually getting some sleep.😳

love, or maybe even some in color.

I actually spotted them at Target recently—they aren't even that pricey. I ended up grabbing a 120-pack from eBay just the other day... they were a different style, but honestly, they're pretty great too. Now I'm just sitting here wondering how long on earth that stash is going to last me 😬

You can pick up those plugs at both Cosmos and Miller. I have to admit, I’ve toyed with the idea myself, though I’ve always been a bit hesitant—not entirely sure if it was actually safe to sleep with them in.

It’s not just a little snoring, either—the walls practically shake from it, so none of those tips above are going to help me. And I honestly, truly cannot fall asleep when someone is snoring. Don't take this the wrong way, but this isn't really a medical issue. How you arrange yourselves in the house, when you study, who shares a room with whom—I’m fairly certain you can work that out among yourselves and settle things somehow.

People work, they go to college, they date, they deal with problems, they struggle with insomnia, they deal with constant noise, or babies waking them up every few hours—and yet, they still show up for exams, go to their jobs, finish their assignments, and somehow manage to function.

Just grit your teeth, organize your study schedule, and sleep whenever you possibly can to recharge; you'll make it through these few days. I don't really know what else to suggest... maybe put on some light, relaxing music, grab some headphones, and fight for a spot on the couch (assuming it's comfortable enough). 🤷
Also, if anyone knows how to use makeup to make eyes look less tired, that would be a lifesaver :/

The Beauty subforum will definitely have much better answers for that. 😉
