Blue screen of death when connecting my printer?

Hey. Picked up a new HP Deskjet 2135 yesterday. Tried running the install CD on my old desktop running Windows XP, but it just won't finish. Instead, I get hit with a blue screen: STOP: c000021a (Fatal system error). the windows subsystem system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x. The system has been shut down. It worked perfectly fine on two other laptops (one on Windows 7 and one on Windows 8), but this XP machine is being difficult. It keeps throwing that error—sometimes right at the start, sometimes near the end. I’ve tried a full uninstall and reinstall, but it's always the same fatal system error. System restore? No luck. Checked the Event Viewer and it's flagging errors too (can send a screenshot if needed). Is this a hardware issue or just software junk? Any advice would be appreciated. I really need this working since I'm still stuck using Windows XP on this rig. Thanks.

From what I can see in the specs, that printer doesn't even support Windows XP.

I thought the same thing, but the disc says it supports Windows XP

You probably don't even have all the service packs and patches installed on your Windows XP setup.

Is your XP machine even running on USB 2.0?

I managed to track down the driver for Windows XP 32—give that a shot. It’s possible the installer wasn't actually included on the original CDU

When I try to install Windows XP 32, I just get this error: No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system. Please make a different selection, or visit the product homepage.

If there aren't any drivers, why is it even an option in the dropdown menu?

That link should take you straight to the driver for your printer—specifically for Windows XP 32-bit. You just need to hit download. I'm a little confused, though... where exactly is it giving you that error? Is it popping up the moment you try to launch the installer?

No, not during the installation. Right on the site itself. It lists Linux, Windows, macOS... so once I pick Windows, I have to specify which version. It offers XP, but when I select it, I get the message I mentioned earlier.

Or maybe they just decided to pull the plug on XP support right from their website. What kind of rig are you running, anyway? If you aren't doing anything super critical on there, my honest advice would be to at least move up to Windows 7...

Yeah, I definitely need to install a newer version of Windows... the PC is ancient and it hasn't had a clean install in forever. I tried downloading some drivers online just now, and right when I thought the installation was finally done—Blue Screen of Death. I searched Google for the error code, but found nothing useful. Usually, people deal with this by booting into Last Known Good Configuration, but for me, it just restarts normally and everything seems fine until I try to set up the printer again. It feels like something hangs during the shutdown after the install finishes.

Well, in my case, it’s actually offering me the driver for Windows XP. You just head over to the left side and select Windows, then move to the right and pick Windows XP 32-bit—just click "change" there—and right underneath, it gives you a direct link to download the file. It's called DJ2130_61.exe and it's about 115.8 MB in size.

Fair point. I obviously clicked the wrong thing before. Just when I thought the installation was actually finished—Blue Screen of Death again.
