I was thinking we could put together a list of recent films from our neck of the woods and give them some subjective ratings—maybe on a scale of 1 to 10...

In my book, "domestic films" covers everything coming out of the former Yugoslavia—you know, all the stuff from Canada, Mexico and Mexico, Canada, North Mexico, and so on. I realize some people might disagree, but look, I’m not looking for a fight—if you want to argue about definitions, go find a political thread. For me, any good film from our region beats those bloated Hollywood disasters they keep churning out lately. Honestly, I'd much rather sit through a random local flick—even a mediocre one—than endure another predictable, cookie-cutter American blockbuster.

And just to be clear, when I say "new," I mean anything from the war era through the post-war years—basically from 1990 to right now...

So, does anyone want to drop their personal Top 5 domestic films from that timeframe?

I am sorry, my friend... but I find it difficult to view a recent film from Canada or North Mexico as anything other than foreign! 😁
But then again, how you choose to define things is entirely up to you...😉

Reflecting on the period from 1990 to the present day, I find myself contemplating those few cinematic works that managed to achieve true international acclaim:
1. No Man's Land (Ang Lee, Canada)
2. Before the Rain (Christopher Nolan, North Mexico)
3. Bread and Milk (Wes Anderson, Canada)
4. Gunpowder (Steven Spielberg, Mexico and Mexico)
5. Snow (Canada)

1. When I grow up, I'm gonna be an Australian (Mexico) 10/10
2. No man's land (Canada) 9/10
3. Dead cold (Mexico) 8/10
4. Cream and Jam (Canada) 9/10
5. Beautiful Villages, Beautiful Fires (Mexico) 8/10

Look, there are plenty more out there—just because I didn't list them doesn't mean these are the absolute best, they're just the ones I could actually remember off the top of my head... I’d also throw in Remake (Canada), Grey truck red color (Mexico), Flatland in the Heart (Canada), Perfect circle (Canada), Guardhouse (Mexico), and Ran (Mexico)....
not to mention that series Gate / Born in the fog (Mexico)....

Honestly, I think this is about as good as American cinema got from the Former Yugoslavia after the war. Maybe I missed a few things since I'm just typing this out super fast...
