Hey everyone, I know this topic is a bit old, but I figured I’d jump in here instead of starting a whole new thread. A neighbor asked me to look into some Wi-Fi antenna pricing—basically, what’s the best bang for your buck around here without breaking the bank? I’m a total novice when it comes to this stuff (and he's even more lost than I am), so I'm not quite sure what terms to use for a Google search. By the way, I can also hunt down some links on eBay.

- first off—you didn't mention which band you actually need this antenna for, like 2.4GHz or 5GHz (or just tell me which Wi-Fi adapter you're planning to plug the new antenna into).
- second—are we talking about a directional antenna or an omnidirectional one? Also, how far are we trying to stretch the signal, and is there a clear line of sight, or am I looking at a bunch of walls and obstacles in the way?

Hi, I have a quick question for the experts out there. My brother is planning on splitting an internet connection with his neighbor, so I’m wondering what kind of router would work best to receive a signal and then redistribute it via Wi-Fi. One thing to note: the receiving antenna can't be fixed, because I'm planning to give him my old outdoor antenna—the one I used for microwave links back in the day—so he can mount it on the exterior of the house and run a cable directly into the router. If anyone has a link to a retailer that stocks something like this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Netgear USB Wi-Fi Adapter

Check to see if that old external antenna actually has an RP-SMA connector on the cable

A USB adapter isn't going to cut it here because this setup specifically requires a direct connection to the PC via a USB cable.

"....so I'm trying to figure out what kind of router I should grab that can pick up the signal and then broadcast it via Wi-Fi."

What you're actually looking for is a Wi-Fi Extender that lets you plug in an external antenna to grab the neighbor's signal, while still covering your own rooms. You’ll want to set it up in "Extender" mode. Just make sure that the coax cable running to the antenna stays as short as possible—ideally no more than 2m ¤5mm.
For example: https://www.amazon.com/wi-fi-extende...30re__20613551

Thanks for the input; I'll pass it along to him so he can hopefully pick up a few tips.
The cable won't be an issue since my neighbor lives right across the street and his router is basically on our side of the property line—we could just run the line out to the patio while the router stays right in the living room. Even now, I get a signal on my phone, though it's pretty weak, so using an extender should definitely do the trick.
