If it were illegal to gamble at foreign online sites—like how they do things in Turkey or France—then those bookies wouldn't even let people from the US sign up.

The US gambling laws

2. participating in foreign gambling activities wherethe bets are being placed within the United States,

3. collecting wagers within the United States for participation in gambling games held abroad,

basically, betting on foreign online sites is only against the rules if you're actually placing a bet from the US but if you just snag a bonus without putting any cash down, then it's totally fine—since technically, just using foreign online gambling sites isn't prohibited as long as you aren't wagering.

Why make it complicated? 🤷
If you just withdraw to Skrill/Neteller and then move it to your US bank account... how is anyone supposed to know that money came from a sportsbook?

...like, if Chase calls you up to prove where your cash came from—or even if the IRS starts asking questions—what happens if you just tell them the truth? Like, if you say you got it from an overseas online sportsbook via a sign-on bonus, since there were actually zero deposits involved??

Even though I personally managed to snag three separate $100 deposit bonuses over the last two and a half years (one for joining and two via the "Sign-on bonus")
.
I suspect if they roll out another "Sign-on bonus," our location in America won't be an issue; otherwise, they tend to disqualify us from those offers, unlike everyone else. -.-

Thanks so much for the answers. Here is a fresh one on the site 🙂 thanks

Are you trolling me or just being paranoid? You betting at online bookies? Playing the lottery? Or just asking questions for the hell of it?

I've pulled cash from Skrill to my checking account and directly from sportsbooks to my bank a ton of times. Never once has anyone asked me where it came from or how I got it...

...just wondering

...yeah, but how exactly?

Were you depositing at a sportsbook here in the US or what?

What do you mean "how"? 🤷
I was depositing just like every other American who uses international online books.

...I mean, what I was getting at was, like,
are we talking about doing this here in the States or somewhere abroad?

okay, so I'm guessing you've been making deposits right here in the US

I've been using Bet365 for a couple of years now—transferring my winnings straight into my Chase account—and honestly, nobody has ever batted an eye...

Sure, the amounts have always stayed under ten thousand dollars, but even then, there were never any questions asked.

At the end of the day, the bank statement clearly shows where the money came from. And if someone actually wants to be above board—well, they can just pay their taxes to the IRS; that’s what most people doing online work do. It’s the only way to ensure total peace of mind.

I don't really get why online betting would even be restricted, especially since we're part of the Union. "The free movement of people, goods, and capital within the Union"—if anyone tried to argue against that, I'd take them to court in a heartbeat... 😂

...I don't see anything in the US gaming laws that actually bans betting on foreign online sites, it's more like you're only in hot water if you're paying from within the States.

Even if you tried to withdraw, I guess you might run into trouble if you used a US account—they'd probably just seize the funds and maybe even hit you with a fine up to 50 $0.00.

But I'm really curious—what happens if someone uses an overseas bank account instead?

Does anyone have some solid info on this?

Unless someone actually asks me, I couldn't care less about the rules.

The way online betting works here—it’s been this way for years. Nobody ever brings up issues with money transfers, so I don't see why you keep making such a big deal out of it.

Does anyone know why Fonbet is blocking bettors here in the US?

Sorry, this is totally off-topic—but I’m super new here! Does anyone mind helping me out? How do I actually do the whole quoting thing so I can reply to people properly? It would make chatting way easier, I guess!

I know, I know, this is kind of silly😂

James Taylor3 says As long as nobody asks me, I couldn't care less about the rules.

Look, online betting here has worked just fine for years—nobody ever brings up issues with moving money around, so I guess I don't get why you keep harping on it.

I'm not harping on anything—it's just how the US gambling laws could be interpreted, maybe.

In just seven days, Betfair is hiking up the base margin for players here in the States from 5% to 7%. Some people have already seen their rates climb, though nothing has hit above 6.5% yet. I’m just sitting here wondering if they’re planning to roll out these hikes in other countries too.
Clearly, we aren't exactly at the top of their priority list.

Hey there—quick question for the group. I’m trying to get set up with a Bwin account, but I've hit a bit of a wall. Every time I go to register, I can't even select the US from the country dropdown menu. Is there some kind of workaround for this, or am I just totally out of luck with the registration process?

If you aren't offered an American account, don't bother—eventually, they’ll demand a scan of your ID to prove who you actually are.

On a similar note, I wouldn't dream of recommending Bwin; their odds are frankly abysmal. You're much better off sticking with Bet365 or Pinnacle.

I have to admit, I’m really digging the sheer depth of the selection here—Bet365 just doesn't quite hit the same level of variety that Bwin offers... and as for those odds? Well, let's just say they aren't exactly looking anything like what was promised.
