The Factory on December 11th, 2021—celebrating 40 years since the Package Deal dropped (even though the record actually came out in 1980, I guess it doesn't really matter when it hit the shelves, just that it was born in '80).

And man, don't even get me started on this whole mess with the COVID passes. Apparently, you have to get a test that’s no more than 48 hours old, which costs $17. So then you're stuck trying to schedule an appointment at some local clinic for Friday the 10th, or you're just totally out of luck? $27 getting in, $17 testing, it’s basically just $43. Then there's drinks, grabbing food somewhere... you're looking at a minimum of 300 bucks. If you skip the test, maybe it's 250, but if you try to cut corners on the drinks, then $67.

Oh, here we go. Just another excuse for an urgent booster shot. 🙂

I was actually at Madison Square Garden back on July 2nd. I’m planning on hitting it up again once I get my COVID clearance sorted out, I guess. As for the spending, I wouldn't say I go overboard or anything, it really just depends on how much everyone can handle and what you're drinking. For me, it's just a standard amount for an event like this, nothing crazy.

Also, if I pick up some cigarettes—I don't really consider myself a regular smoker anymore, but sometimes the craving hits, you know?—then definitely $100 goes right out the window.

Big news!

1. That "Unplugged" album is getting a fresh CD reissue. Looks like the vinyl version should be dropping sometime this spring.
2. Also, Gillette’s old "TV Music, Film and Museum" record is coming back on CD, and we might see the vinyl in the spring too.
3. Back in the summer, there was some talk that either Columbia Records or maybe Atlantic Records would do a full vinyl reissue of that complete 16-track live set from the "Warsaw '81" tour.

I guess we're all just sitting around waiting for them to finally announce a vinyl release for "Why Not," since nothing has been said about that one yet.

Oh, and I just saw another update about that upcoming show at the Factory. It looks like they're going to be playing some tracks from Carl and Idol’s Package Deal, along with a few deep cuts they haven't touched in ages, I guess.

Woke up around 4:30 in the afternoon..

Everything felt pretty packed. There wasn't a massive crush right by the stage while they were playing, but man, the venue was full. Honestly, the vibe and the setlist were way better than that show back in July at Madison Square Garden. The band seemed totally locked in and the energy in the room was just heavy. It dipped for a second when they played those two longer tracks from "that table to see that and be," mostly because the crowd really lives for those raw rock anthems—clearly, people weren't really feeling those long psych jams.
They played "Little Man" by Carl and "Plastic" by Idol. Most of the set was a mix from the albums "Distortion," "Where to be now," and "that table to see that and be." But they threw in some other bits too, like "Petrified," "connect oneself now," "sex drugs nation and fear," "play Rnr all Yugoslavia," "how drum Kazo," and "Locomotion"...
Oh yeah, they also did "Formal White Shirts." And then some of those early career tracks like "You," "Waiter," "Golden Parrot," "Crocodile..."
And they even played "Infection" from the first album. Which, interestingly enough, sounded kind of wild given everything with the pandemic lately 😁

The one thing that felt lost (I don't know if it's because of the pandemic or just their new policy now)
is that they started ushering everyone out right at midnight. I guess I'm just used to the old days where once the concert ends, people hang out until 4 AM. That's when the real fun starts. This felt more like, "come to the show and then get out immediately." I'm not a huge fan of that.
I had to help them out with a few things, so I didn't really get a chance to mingle with the ladies, which is usually my favorite part of any show—just seeing who's around. It’s the best part, especially when you know every single song by heart and have seen the show a million times already, so you can just focus on the social side of things 😁 But it looks like there wasn't much time for that anyway.
The band showed up around 8:30. They probably started clearing people out about half an hour before that. The music kicked off around 9 or maybe shortly after. Then at midnight, everyone's out the door 😁

Back in the day, we used to head over to Apple for the afterparty, but Apple isn't an option anymore. I wonder where everyone went since it's Saturday; I didn't really have a chance to figure it out or ask around because I was busy helping the band with some stuff.
All in all, the concert was exactly what it should have been. The atmosphere, the playing, everything felt right.
That Madison Square Garden show was decent, but compared to this, it felt like they were just going through the motions. This one was absolutely electric.

I honestly have no clue what the whole COVID verification situation was like at the entrance, since I just walked straight into the Factory with the band and nobody checked us. Whether they were actually looking at IDs and vaccination records for everyone else, I don't know. You’d probably have to ask someone else who was there. I actually posted about this on another thread, but man, I spent five bucks on a certificate and had to order it three days in advance because apparently that was the rule. Then, the day before the show, I was standing outside a local clinic waiting for them to open up the testing bin, freezing my butt off, just so I could get a paper copy sorted out since my old phone doesn't even handle email properly... all that just to walk into the venue without being questioned. Maybe that was just for the band, and maybe everyone else did have to show their stuff. But hey, if I’d known, I wouldn't have bothered with the paperwork. My bandmates just told me I should have it ready just in case.

Look, I’ve known those guys for a really long time, since way back in '99. I used to work with another guy handling all their merch, helping lug gear around, and stepping in for security if things got hairy. You probably would've seen me hanging around their booth; I was there most of the time, both at the arena and when colored programming is playing. Honestly, you might've even grabbed a beer on me if you'd actually shown up. I even ran into some familiar faces from the old security crews I used to work with. As for Banana, I'm gonna try to see if something works out regarding music, because there's some material there. And before all that, I spent my twelve years working through sixteen different security firms, embassies, consulates, Ivanisevic and his son Emmanuel, Iva Majoli and her daughter, R. Kovac, foreign ambassadors... yeah, I was the one providing security for all of that.
Since I turned 21, it's just been uniforms and weapons, though I never really wanted anything to do with that side of things. It was always just about the music. It looks like I might land a different gig over at Columbia Records or maybe Atlantic Records. I was hanging with them today and I know some people there, so it's not a huge stretch.
The main thing for me is seeing if I can make something happen with Banana; they've got some stuff that might catch someone's ear. We'll see how it goes.
