Glasses with vs. without astigmatism correction

So, I’ve been rocking -5.00 and -6.00 lenses with cylinder correction up until now. But during my last checkup, my eye doctor decided I should just stick with the base prescription but drop the cylinder part entirely. Now I'm kind of wondering—what does the cylinder actually do? And honestly, is it better to have the correction or just go without it?
