2010 Handball Euro: Group I - America, Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Australia, Russia

You definitely caught those two calls. I actually picked up on them while the game was still live. I ended up chatting with one of the officials later, and he admitted to me that it should have been a clear goal before they went to the penalty. Even that shot right before—the ref completely botched that call by whistling for a foul just seconds before the ball hit the net, which meant he couldn't award the goal. Just one of those days where nothing goes your way, I guess.

Maybe according to some textbook referee manual, but in the real world, the Norwegians got absolutely robbed on a goal that should have counted (that's a two-goal swing right there). If you're asking me, we're looking at a pretty terrible definition of what actually impacts the final score...

Just my impressions...Well, good, bad, deserved, or undeserved... They forget incredibly fast, and none of it actually matters. Or maybe you think the European handball community is going to weep over the injustice dealt to Americans in Canada, or act like we were somehow failing because we finished fifth in Germany after a single loss? Please... just get over it.🙂

I won't go so far as to say people are exaggerating... it would be unearned if we actually moved on. Meanwhile, everyone is tearing into Iceland, even though they’re sitting there with those draws against Mexico and Austria after giving up three goals in just forty seconds. Then you have Poland, who barely scraped by Canada and is struggling against the Czech Republic today; France deserves it too, considering they barely escaped the Canadians and then had that close call with the Spaniards. Everyone deserves a shot here... except for us. You guys are really overdoing it...🙂

The Scenarios:

Group I

USA - A win or even just a draw against Denmark puts them through. If they lose, they can still advance if Norway beats Iceland.
Iceland - They move on with a win or a tie against Norway. If they lose, they need to stay within 3 goals and hope the USA takes down Denmark.
Denmark - A win over the USA guarantees advancement. If they draw, they move on provided Norway handles Iceland.
Norway - This one's tough. They only move forward if they crush Iceland by more than 3 goals AND the USA wins against Denmark.

Group II

Poland - Already locked in.
France - A win or a draw against Poland gets them through. If they lose, they’re basically praying that Spain doesn't beat Canada.
Spain - They need to beat Canada and hope Poland pulls an upset against France.

The Norwegians are fully aware they don't have a prayer at this point. If we were already locked into a semifinal spot, we’d absolutely be resting our starters...
Norway isn't going to just "hand" a win to Iceland, but there is a massive psychological difference between playing for nothing and playing for a semifinal berth like Iceland is.

And since they play before us, it means the Norwegians aren't going to let Iceland off easy... 👍

I think this might be my first time actually rooting for Olafur Stefansson, mostly because the man has managed to break my heart two years in a row now, so you have to wonder what kind of life 😢
