I’m running into a bit of a headache here. I’ve been trying to play Battlefield 2 on my Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit system, but since the game originally came out back in 2005, it was really only ever tested to run on XP 32 bit. Everything works fine when I'm playing solo, but as soon as I try to jump onto a local server to play with some friends, the whole thing just crashes. I thought I could probably fix this by using the Troubleshoot compatibility mode to run it as if I were on XP SP2, but that didn't go well at all. My entire computer just froze up, leaving me with no choice but to do a hard restart. That happened a few times in a row, which was pretty frustrating. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? It’s strange because the game itself runs perfectly smoothly otherwise; it just refuses to cooperate whenever we try to play on a local connection.

I was just sitting here wondering where on earth they tucked away that file search tool in Windows 7... you know, the one where you can just type in a specific term and it pulls up every single file and folder with that name, kind of like how Windows XP used to make it so simple with that "search files and folders" option right there in the Start menu...

So, once you click the Start button with your mouse, you'll see "search programs and files" sitting right above the icons. 🙂

I don't really find much on there most of the time, you know... like if I try searching for a specific song title, it just comes up empty... and honestly, since I keep pretty much everything on my D drive, that might be exactly where the issue lies...

Just go to My Computer -> click on the D drive -> then type whatever you're looking for in the search box at the top right.🙂

Hi everyone. I don't post here very often, so please excuse me if I've messed up the thread format or posted in the wrong subforum. 😬

I'm having some trouble installing drivers for certain devices that prompt me to plug them into a USB port during the setup process. I suspect this might be because the standard Windows USB drivers aren't quite handling everything correctly.

Every once in a while, I find it necessary to reinstall the OS because it tends to "degrade" over time. I use TuneUp Utilities to regularly clean up the registry and other system files, but that's no substitute for a clean install. 😁

That time has come, and these driver issues are pretty much convincing me that it's time for a change.
The thing is, I really don't want to deal with reinstalling about 20 different programs I use frequently, re-downloading 8 games where I might lose my save files, or backing up all my important data from the C drive. A repair install seems like a better option for me.
Could someone explain exactly what a repair install replaces and what actually stays intact?
If I this right, my programs should stay put (and I assume the registry remains untouched as well, is that correct?), along with my personal files, though I'd still need to redo the drivers. Am I on the right track?

"To install any USB device, just plug it in to your computer." (link)

And slightly lower: Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly

BTW, which specific drivers are acting up? 🤔

In over a year of using Win7, I haven't felt any system "degradation" that would force me to do a reinstall. 🤷

Ever since I switched over to Windows 7, whenever I plug something into a USB port that doesn't have pre-installed drivers, I get an error saying the device isn't recognized. This means the standard method of just plugging it in and letting the driver install itself doesn't work for me.
Specifically, it’s been happening with my camera and my printer.

I haven't really felt the need to reinstall the OS myself, but I guess things just start accumulating a bunch of digital clutter over time—not talking about actual programs or files, just general system junk.

I've got four cameras. Two from Canyon, one Labtec, and one Sweex, if I remember right. None of them are working on this machine, even though they work fine on another computer.
The printer is an EPSON Stylus SX215 all-in-one.

Printer (all-in-one) EPSON Stylus SX215.

I've been tinkering with computers since I was a kid. The first thing I ever did was try to download drivers for my OS and actually install them. During the installation, it asks me to plug the printer into a USB port so it can detect the connection. I do exactly that, wait 20 minutes, and then the software tells me it couldn't find anything. I repeated the whole process 20 times, and it's the same result every single time.

And yeah, I already tried different USB ports.

I'm having the exact same issue installing my webcam. When it prompts me to plug it in so the software can detect it, nothing happens.

Windows failed to recognize or install those generic drivers for the device, and even the manufacturer's own software isn't doing the trick... have you tried pulling anything from Windows Update? Honestly, I don't see any other way to get those cameras or the printer functioning properly. 🤷

Windows Update isn't offering me anything, so I'm stuck on what to actually download.
I see another option here, which is just reinstalling Windows. That’s why I’m asking for answers to the questions in my original post. Please stop telling me to try installing drivers; I've already tried "everything."

I see another option here, and it’s called reinstalling Windows. So, please just answer the questions from my original post, instead of telling me to try installing drivers—because trust me, I've already tried "everything.".

If you had actually read the details on the "this" page, you would have seen this:

"ITEMS THAT WILL BE RESET TO DEFAULT OR AFFECTED:
Device Drivers - Be sure to have these handy to reinstall. They do not always remain after the repair (upgrade) install."

So, if your camera or printer drivers aren't working right now, do you honestly think they're suddenly going to start working after you do that? 🤷

Man...

Like I was saying, I don't think the drivers are the issue. It feels more like a USB interface problem, which will hopefully clear up once I finish reinstalling Windows, since I haven't even had them set up properly from the start.
Now I'm just looking for someone who could confirm what this says—maybe someone who has actually gone through a repair install before.

I honestly think you should just try re-copying those files back into the Windows folder on your C. drive.
But I have to ask—what makes you so certain that a full reinstall or even just a Windows repair would actually fix this?

Edit: Have these devices ever actually worked on Windows 7 using those specific drivers? To me, that feels like the more likely culprit. It’s not exactly rare for Windows to fail at recognizing a scanner, a printer, or a camera. Plug and Play will usually pick up a thumb drive without much fuss, but it rarely goes that deep with hardware like this.

Manufacturers probably just didn't bother developing new drivers for a newer OS. Their older models are ancient at this point, so they’re likely banking on people upgrading to newer hardware that actually plays nice with Windows 7. In that case, you can't really blame Windows 7,
the Epson situation is strange, but honestly, it's not impossible,
Microsoft didn't just pull these Plug and Play drivers out of thin air; they grabbed them from the manufacturers and baked them right into the OS.

Some things just aren't compatible. My take is based on my wife's ancient Samsung D900 phone. I tried looking for Windows 7 drivers for it and nearly lost my mind—not because Windows 7 is broken, but because Samsung has released so many phones since then that they couldn't care less about a D900 that hasn't been manufactured in years.
The thing still works perfectly fine, but trying to get it to interact with Windows 7 is an absolute nightmare. Even over Bluetooth, it's a bust, and I haven't even seen where the damn cable is hiding.
I'm not sure if a wired connection would work, but I doubt it if the wireless fails,

that's just what occurred to me. 👍

Everything was running smoothly at first—I installed all my USB devices without a single hiccup. Then, for a few months, I didn't even have a reason to touch my USB setup because nothing changed and I wasn't adding anything new.
Then I picked up a new camera. I tried setting it up (after making sure to uninstall the old drivers), but every time I plug it in, the system says the device isn't recognized. Just five minutes ago, I tested this same camera on another computer, and it worked perfectly there; the built-in drivers were fine. It’s the same issue with my printer.

Sallie Mae, thanks for getting back to me.
Since it seems like I won't get much help elsewhere, 🤣 I'm open to any suggestions, even if they seem a bit off. I'm starting to suspect my Wins aren't playing nice with the USB ports anymore.
