First, you’ll need to go into the BIOS and make sure the SATA drivers are set to AHCI, and honestly... that laptop of yours is a bit of a dinosaur.

The BIOS has been on AHCI this whole time. And I don't get the second part. What do you mean "dinosaur"? Can this thing even run Windows 7?

It’s probably struggling with the integrated graphics and the fact that the RAM is barely sufficient—especially since the integrated chip takes a chunk of that memory for itself. 😢

On that machine, Windows XP would probably run just fine. 🙂

If it were running Windows XP, it would be smooth sailing. 🙂

Oh yeah, I thought it would work, but clearly Windows 7 isn't happening.

Thanks 👍

dustyskipper12 said:I'm hitting a wall with this installation. I'm trying to get Windows 7 onto an Aspire One http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/10767407, which shows you the specs. I follow the standard procedure: grab the 32-bit version, set the keyboard and language settings, wipe the drive. It starts installing, everything looks fine, then it restarts. But instead of picking up where it left off, it just loops back to the very beginning—language selection and keyboard layout all over again!
I've tried this two or three times now and I am officially losing my patience. Does anyone have a clue what's going wrong here?
Thanks

Are you running the install from a USB drive?
Look, here's the deal: for that first boot, you need your USB flash drive or whatever you're using as the installer to be set as the primary boot device in the BIOS. Once that first restart happens, you need to jump straight into the BIOS and switch the internal hard drive back to the top of the boot order. If you don't, the system just keeps booting from the USB, and you'll stay stuck in this endless loop forever.👍

Quick question for you guys. I’ve been scouring the forums, but I can’t seem to find anything helpful... 🤷
I’ve got two partitions on my hard drive, C and D. My plan was simple: keep all the programs on C and dump all my user files over on D. But when I installed everything, the system just shoved all my user files onto C automatically. Even when I tried moving documents manually, they just kept defaulting back to C. So, I tried to do a quick move to the D drive using copy-paste, thinking that would be easy. Big mistake. It didn't work at all because things like Start > My Music won't actually open my stuff—they just point to those weird system files left behind on the old C drive. Now I'm stuck. A buddy told me I totally messed up and that there’s no way to fix it or get it working the way I want. I hope you guys get what I'm trying to do here. For now, I've just copied everything back to C and I'm sitting here waiting for someone to save me... if anyone is willing. 🙂😍

whatever, I was just asking xD ^^

Dude, you totally have them, just look for where it says 'LOCATION'... click that and you'll see three buttons pop up, just type in where you want it to go and hit 'MOVE'...

Is it really not here? Seriously? If I don't copy this folder over, I won't be able to click on anything on my desktop... at least that's how it worked for me last time. 🤷 😢

What do you mean it's not there? You literally have the location right there, so just copy it to your D drive, hit the Documents icon, then use "Send to: Desktop" and you'll be fine 🙂

Also, what do you even mean by "won't be able to click on anything"? Moving your documents to the D drive shouldn't have anything to do with whether or not your desktop icons actually work...

Oops, bad link. Total amateur move on my part, haha...
Anyway, looking at the desktop folder for names, there's no "locations" tab...

So, when I tried moving everything over the first time, I clicked on a folder on my desktop and got an error saying the location was changed and I couldn't open it. Basically, I think I need to move the desktop folder too, but how am I supposed to do that if the option isn't even there? 🤷

hmmm, I don't get how you don't have that option when I see it right there on my desktop icon. And honestly, why are you even trying to move the whole desktop? I mean, just move your Documents to the D drive and set your browser to download everything straight to Documents on D, and that should be plenty... I don't think you'll actually need to mess with the desktop folder itself, at least that's how I see it... ?

hmm... okay, I think everything's working now. I just cut and pasted that folder onto my desktop and everything looks exactly how it should. There are still like two or three folders left over on the C drive, but those are probably just system files so I’m definitely not touching them.
Huge THANKS for the help! 😍
I knew there had to be a way to fix this. It's always so easy for people to just say it can't be done. 🙂

edit: just so I don't end up double posting.

...Everything is great, and I think it actually works. Only thing is, this "Users" folder automatically popped up on my desktop, and it's kind of a pain because I have to click into my username again just to get where I want to go 😁 so I just made a shortcut to the actual folder I need. But if I delete this "Users" folder, will it wipe out my stuff on the D drive too? How do I just hide it from the desktop without deleting it? That "Users" thing isn't just a shortcut.

Personalize -> Change desktop icons -> just uncheck the box for User's Files.

So, what’s the general consensus on Windows 7 Professional? Is there actually any point in jumping ship to something else, like Home Premium or maybe even Ultimate... I mean, sure, you get all those extra language packs with Ultimate, but honestly, that’s not really my thing. Even gaming performance isn't a huge dealbreaker for me either... Do you guys have any pro tips for getting the most out of it, or maybe some go-to software for system maintenance and repairs or whatever... just hit me with anything because I’m dying to hear everyone's take on this whole situation. Plus, I'm still kind of figuring things out myself, so...

btw, I've got another headache for you guys. I'm currently using a Logitech wireless Mouse 1000 + Keyboard, right? Well, the tiny USB receiver just kicked the bucket on me, and since it's wireless, I was wondering if there's any way to get it running over standard Bluetooth or something similar... if anyone knows how to fix this mess, please help me out!

What do you guys think? It's kind of a middle-ground version—it's got a few extra bells and whistles compared to Home Premium:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...oducts/compare

It should be totally fine (maybe even overkill) for whatever you usually do. As far as gaming goes, honestly, it doesn't really matter which version you pick.

Regarding that keyboard and mouse combo, maybe give Microsoft a call or check with a local service center in your area to see if they can track them down for you.
