Anyone know if there's any word on when we might see an SP 1 for Windows 7?

Basically, Aero shuts itself off while you're actually playing—though, obviously, if you alt-tab back to the desktop, it'll kick back in.

I am currently struggling with an issue on my Windows 7 machine where, while I am trying to enjoy some gaming, the image refuses to stretch to fill the entire screen; instead, I am stuck staring at these massive, obnoxious black bars running down both sides of my monitor. I have already attempted to adjust the resolution within the game's own settings and spent quite a bit of time tinkering around in the Catalyst control center, but despite all my efforts, I simply cannot seem to find a solution to this frustrating problem.

.

what game are you playing?
if it's an older one, it probably just doesn't support widescreen (assuming you're using a widescreen monitor).

Older games are capped at 1024x768 because that was the standard screen resolution back then. If the game itself doesn't have built-in support for higher resolutions, you're stuck—there's no way to force it. 👍

Is anyone else having trouble getting the Event Viewer to run? Also, do you have Windows Update turned on?

If it isn't working—and there's a pretty good chance it won't be—this should do the trick.
So I compared the folder permissions to c:\windows\system32\logfiles\wmi\RTbackup to a working machine. Navigate to RTbackup properties and check security settings. It requires SYSTEM - full control. I added this permission and rebooted PC to fix the issue. I can now access my event viewer.

My PC has been acting a bit strange lately—sometimes it tries to wake from hibernation only to immediately slip right back into it. It happened about an hour ago, but when I tried to restart, I was met with a Blue Screen of Death before I could even read the error code. Once I managed to boot back up normally, I tried opening the Event Viewer, but nothing would launch—not even the Windows event log service.

I finally got it working, though naturally, I've lost all the logs between today and March 14, 2010. 😁

It doesn't matter which game I try to launch, even the most recent releases, it’s always the exact same frustrating ordeal; back when I was using a laptop running Windows Vista, all of those games would actually display in full-screen mode without any issues whatsoever.

Event Viewer works fine for me, so I guess I don't really see why it wouldn't be working on your end🤷

Well, looking at what was mentioned above, I'm not entirely sure what's triggering this—I went through the process of an upgrade from RC to RTM myself, though that might just be a coincidence.
It's not like I'm some outlier here; there are plenty of people online dealing with this exact issue (and who knows how many others are facing it without even realizing it)

Does anyone know how to tweak Windows 7 settings so my computer stops hibernating on its own after sitting idle for a while?

hardware and Sounds -> Power Options -> Change plan setting and you can swap things there, or just switch to a different plan altogether

I really need some help here

I just finished installing Windows 7, but every time I try to switch to a different theme, I get an error message saying "this edition of windows doesnt support themes." Does anyone know what I need to do to actually be able to change my themes?

You probably have the Starter version, which doesn't support changing themes

rumors:

The release date of Windows 7 SP1 is getting closer. Scheduled for September 2010, Windows 7 service pack 1 will not dramatically change Windows 7 and is only considered a minor update that might include support for USB3.0, the new WAT and a few fixes here and there.

+

Wzor already confirmed that Windows 7 service pack 1 will include Windows Activation Technologies that is going to block all the pirated Windows 7 copies, but it still hasn’t been confirmed if it will include USB 3.0 support.

Hey guys. I've got this UMX.exe file popping up in Windows that's driving me absolutely nuts. It just shows up out of nowhere—totally random—whenever it feels like it. Does anyone actually know how to kill this thing? I've been scouring Google for answers, but I can't find anything useful. Even Malwarebytes won't touch it.
Help me out here!

Next time it shows up, I'll grab a screenshot and post it.

This isn't really the right place for this discussion—you should probably head over to the IT Help Service subforum... (or maybe the "Security" PDF, I can't quite remember). That’s your best bet if you actually want to get some help.
