Black period: Is this normal?

Anyone else experienced this?

I noticed some black discharge today (it was thick and had little "clumps"). I don't mean dark red, but actually black—sort of like the color of black coffee, if you know what I mean. Does anyone have any idea what that might signify? 🤷

This is my first period since I restarted birth control pills (after an eight-month break), and it’s never been this dark before. I'm wondering if it might be linked to that pale, almost invisible spotting I started having about a week ago.😕

Have you ever experienced any significant pain during your menstrual cycle?
To me, it sounds as though we are witnessing the shedding of old endometrial tissue—since that is essentially what menstruation is, after all—though I must also consider the possibility of a ruptured cyst, which is my immediate thought, even if I fear I am sounding rather foolish with such speculative conclusions. I truly cannot say; it feels plausible, yet I lack the certainty to confirm if such a thing is even possible.

I am entirely convinced that this is linked to birth control; unlike my previous theories, I have no doubt about that.

In fact, I used to experience a thick, dark discharge during ovulation... goodness, I really don't know, these are merely my own hunches, so please, just go see a gynecologist as soon as possible. Have you perhaps switched your brand of oral contraceptives?

Yeah, I definitely went through that.
When I started back on the pill after my break, things were pretty dark for just the first month... then everything leveled out and went back to normal.
Honestly, you really don't need to worry about it...

Honestly, I’m not even stressing about it anymore...
It was dark for a day and a half, then things started looking more typical, and now it's turned red.
I’m wondering if it might just be related to my cycle, since my OB-GYN mentioned during my last checkup that I have a cyst that should clear up on its own by my next period.
Ugh... honestly, dealing with this whole female reproductive system thing can be such a hassle sometimes...🙂

I'm inclined to agree. I've been on Yasmin for two years now, and my first two days always follow that exact pattern—that thick discharge with little bits, followed by the steady red flow.
