I just finished formatting my 1 TB Seagate External HD because I was stuck with some movie folders I couldn't delete. It was full of movies and series, but after the format, everything changed. Now, when I plug it into my Roku to watch something, the VLC Media Player is incapable of opening anything. Instead, I get this error: Unable to create media library. Please check your storage setting. Everything was working perfectly until I decided to format it today.

It seems I likely wiped out a specific setting or file required for the VLC Media Player to recognize the drive. If anyone could offer some advice on how to fix this, I would be incredibly grateful.

Try reformatting that drive again, but this time pick FAT32 instead of NTFS in the settings. Most media players just aren't compatible with NTFS, so you'll have better luck that way.

The Roku can actually read NTFS.

Those first-gen Roku units totally freak out with their media library if you’ve got a drive formatted as HFS Journaled.

I have Windows 10 installed on my laptop, and when I right-click my Seagate External HD, I get the option to format using either NTFS or exFAT. I’ve tried both, but for some reason, my Roku just won't recognize the drive.👎 When I was looking at the Allocation unit size during formatting, I just went with the Default allocation size.

I know I'm missing something, but I can't quite put my finger on it. My laptop recognizes the formatted Seagate External HD perfectly fine—I can watch movies without a hitch—but the TV via my Roku won't see it at all. The media player is about four years old, give or take. I tried playing a movie off a USB stick instead, and that worked flawlessly, so I'm assuming the issue lies somewhere in the formatting. Any ideas on what else I could try? And, of course, thanks to everyone who has helped so far.

Until someone with more experience using this kind of VLC Media Player chimes in, I’d say just dive into the device's actual menu. Take a look at what settings it's actually offering—maybe there's a formatting option or some other tweak tucked away in there. You might also find some answers if you dig through the user manual.

Thanks, wearymason4, for the reply. I suppose I'll just have to wait for someone who actually understands this stuff to chime in with something useful. Unfortunately, my technical expertise ends once I plug a Seagate External HD into my Roku and hit play on a movie via the TV.🍿

There’s another way you could play this, honestly. Just plug that external USB drive straight into the TV and watch your movies right from there.
