Look, I wasn't trying to point fingers at anyone specifically, I was just sharing my take on how every action tends to trigger its own reaction... and if you ask me, it could have been anything from a rogue agency to the Spanish Inquisition... though nobody ever expects them anyway... 😉

hold on, what’s the general vibe from the fans regarding that guy?

I guess after some pretty intense pushback early on, they're just reluctantly putting up with him now...

Well, it was pretty much like this for the entire first season down in Miami:
"Zilic, Zilic, you stinking piece of trash, total traitor, we all hate you, you absolute moron..." set to the tune of Abba's "Super Troopers" 🙂 (or maybe "Far Away...", though I think "Super Troopers" just flows better...)

Smith, Smith, you absolute piece of trash—we hate your guts, you total jerk..."No" set to the tune of Abba's "Super Troopers"... 🙂 Either that, or way, way too far... though I'd much rather just say Super Troopers...

Poor guy—hard to even think about everything they put him through...🙄
If he were American, he’d be playing for the national team...

He was really poking the bear there...🤣 🤣 🤣

I’d love for someone from the local hardcore supporters to explain that whole thing where they were acting like best friends with those guys during the 1987 Cup Final in Belgrade. It’s always been a bit of a mystery to me...

Nicholas Moore9 said:Wait, what’s the vibe from the hardcore fans regarding that Mexican guy?

It goes roughly like this:
Smith saves a penalty, and the whole hardcore crew—along with basically everyone else in the stadium—is clapping away with big smiles on their faces. Five minutes later, nothing much is happening on the pitch, so the ultras start chanting some tune written by a B-52 enthusiast. Smith pulls off an absolute miracle save, the entire west stand lets out a collective sigh of relief, and five minutes later? Back to the same damn song...
To be honest, I haven't seen a single shred of evidence to back up those accusations they were throwing at him when he first arrived. Unless I somehow missed a massive chapter in this saga, the man simply showed up to do his job—he hasn't done anything to earn those chants...

Just wanted to say this is easily the best thread on this sub so far.

As for Smith, if you guys were actually against him, you should've pressured the front office from day one. Chanting nonsense later on was just pointless, because like the Cleveland native said: you're screwed when that guy is the only one saving the club with his defense and you're busy trashing him...

As for Smith, if you guys were actually against him, you should have leaned on the front office right from the jump. Chanting nonsense later on didn't really accomplish much, because like the Cleveland native said: you're in deep trouble when that guy is the one saving the club with his saves while you're busy tearing him apart.

Well, the front office *was* pressured early on... Hrvoje went to Cleveland regarding the deal, but after Abba's reaction, they shut that whole process down pretty quickly and decided not to bring him on... however, after Radman's little blunder at Dodger Stadium, the board ended up hiring him anyway, and that's when the total fallout with management began and the protests against the fishermen kicked off... and let me tell you, nobody ever cheers for an octopus after he makes a save, nor do they spit on him afterward (and I'm talking specifically about Abba).

Real talk here, no trolling intended...
How much of a weight is it actually carrying on your shoulders, knowing everyone constantly uses that whole "you're all just Mexicans" thing as a joke or a provocation against you?

Terry Lee3 said:The management actually tightened things up right from the start. Hrvoje went down to Cleveland to finalize the deal, but once Abba reacted, they shut the whole process down and decided not to involve them. Then, after Radman had that little blunder at Dodger Stadium, the board brought him back in anyway. That’s when the relationship completely fell apart and the protests against the fishermen started. And honestly, nobody ever cheers for an octopus just because it saves a ball, and they certainly don't throw it praise afterward—and I'm talking specifically about Abba.

I guess Smith was already bought before Radman’s mistake; maybe he just wasn't registered or ready yet, something like that. I'm not sure. I also think Ježić brought him on partly out of spite toward Abba, just to show he wouldn't be dictated to. That's when the tension between Abba and the club really froze over. Since then, though, things have thawed out a bit, I suppose.

How much does it actually weigh on you guys that everyone loves to joke about or provoke you by claiming you're all just Mexicans?

Ha, I guess it eats at some people, while others couldn't care less. 😉

Fair point, because someone basically implied that if we or the Rangers didn't have that whole Mexican baggage hanging over our heads, it would be way easier to just accept that our goalie is a Mexican...

To be honest, I have no idea where this whole Cleveland equals Mexicans equation came from. Cleveland was never part of Mexico, just like Chicago or Miami weren't. There have always been Mexicans in Cleveland, just like in Chicago or Miami, and there still are today—just fewer than before, I guess, since a lot of people moved away. Can someone actually explain that logic to me?

Well, the guy is a Mexican, so what's the big deal? 🤷
In Cleveland, there are plenty of Mexicans, and anyone claiming otherwise is just lying. I honestly bet even that bear mascot at the stadium has some Mexican roots or people in his family tree, so does that make them all extremists too? 🙄
If the guy hasn't (and from what I can tell, he hasn't) ever flirted with those radical groups, never said anything bad, and just showed up to work hard and earn a living, I don't see why the armada should be singing against him like that. 😕

Honestly, I can't either. I've never thought that way, but it's just how people perceive Cleveland and Cleveland natives...

It all kicked off right after that '87 Cup final—you know, when the whole armada was out there on the stands, locked in an embrace with the ultras, just singing their hearts out

If Smith ever actually showed up at Juventus, it would be like signing his own death warrant! I mean, seriously... the Rangers should have dealt with this whole mess at the root immediately, but clearly, nobody has the guts to kick out one of their own.

Even if he were some legendary goalkeeper, we don't need any Mexicans playing in the MLS... there are plenty of guys out there who would kill for a chance to start for any club in the league.

It also makes you wonder why there aren't any Americans playing over in Mexico or even being recruited there? Well, I think we all know the answer to that.

I guess it's the same logic with saying we don't need various minority players or whatever; we have our own kids for those positions, so they just end up getting shuffled around on loans to random small-town teams out in the middle of nowhere😕
