My PC has been incredibly sluggish over the last couple of days. I know my RAM is low—only 256MB—but everything was running fine until recently. I've already run an Avast scan, and it came up clean. Is there any way to speed this thing up? I read somewhere on a forum that you can clear out certain processes to free up memory. If there's a fix... please don't just suggest a full wipe.

Hey, just hop into your Project Manager and check which processes are eating up all your RAM.

Maybe try defragging your PC... might speed things up a bit...

I took a look. Are you referring to the Project Manager and then the processes tab? I have no idea what I'm looking at. It's just a bunch of abbreviations. For example: AspDish.exe, SvcHost.exe.

Honestly, you should try running a disk defrag on your hard drive first, and then grab a tool like Magic Speed—using that should give you a nice little boost in performance.

I downloaded that tool already. Are there specific settings I need to tweak, or just run it?

Just grab it, get it installed, fire it up, and honestly? Just follow the prompts on the screen. As far as I know, it might take you about ten days of running it, but it’s totally worth it to finally scrub all that junk off your PC.

I just finished running the scan in that utility. It flagged several issues.

-software locations 2 errors
-shared programs 1425 errors
-Com/Activex entries 296 error
-startup program list 2 error

Should I go ahead and wipe everything it found, or is there a better way to handle this?

I've already done that. I ran a "clean" on the temporary files. Now I'm at the memory defragmentation step. Is there actually any point in doing that?

Memory defrag? Yeah, right. Total scam.

Anyway, try going to start-->run-->services.msc

Here’s what you can safely turn off from MSC:

Thanks, everyone. My PC is running significantly faster now. I just hope I didn't disable anything essential or delete something vital in the process. Cheers, and thanks again.

Might as well jump in here...
About a week ago, I ripped a DVD from a local rental store🤣, and ever since, my Windows boot times have ballooned to 3 or 4 minutes. Audio glitches at startup, and gaming is out of the question—even Minesweeper stutters. I’ve run scans with Avast, Adware, Spybot, and NOD32. My rig isn't exactly a dinosaur; I've got 1GB of RAM and a 2.5GHz processor. Could the OS be shot? When I try to defrag the C drive where Windows lives, it takes about two hours because those unmovable system files are scattered all over the partition. I'm out of my depth here, so if anyone has any advice, I'm all ears.

First off, just wipe out all those antivirus programs you've been piling on.
1. Windows > Delete > Prefetch
2.
Start > Run... > msconfig > startup > Disable All > Disable All > Ok > Restart
If none of that actually fixes it, you might as well just wipe the whole drive and reinstall everything.

speed up Windows XP--->Speed Up Windows XP—and you’ll have to figure the rest out on your own, because there's just no way to explain all of it in a single post.
