I am currently weighing the decision to pick up an HP Envy, but I’m feeling a bit skeptical about the situation regarding third-party ink cartridges.
The technical specs mention four different inks, though they only seem to bundle two with the machine; my concern is that once I burn through the factory originals and need to restock, will the unit actually function only using those alternative high-capacity options—specifically the PG-40 or CL-41—since they supposedly offer better value? I spotted this PG-40 at a local Staples outlet listed in both 28ml and larger sizes, and frankly, I’m wondering if the bigger volume will even fit in the slot.

- Method: 4-ink micro-jet system utilizing FINE technology with 2pl droplets
- Inks:
- HP PG-37 black (220 pages)
- HP CL-38 color (205 pages)
- HP PG-40 black (355 pages) option
- HP CL-41 color (308 pages) option

The specs mention four inks, but you only get two in the box. Once I run through the originals and need replacements, can I run the machine using only those other two options—specifically the PG-40 or CL-41—since they seem to have a higher capacity and might be cheaper? I saw this PG-40 at a local supply shop listed in both 20ml and 28ml sizes. How does that work? Will the larger one actually fit?

- Method: 4-ink micro-jet technology, FINE tech, 2pl droplets
- Inks:
- HP PG-37 black (220 pages)
- HP CL-38 color (205 pages)
- HP PG-40 black (355 pages) option
- HP CL-41 color (308 pages) option

Why bother with third-party ink when the originals aren't even that pricey?
For the price of $96, you're getting a printer that delivers top-tier color quality. I've actually sold one myself, so I know what it can do... it really is solid.👍
I'd definitely vote for the Envy.

Regarding the colors, it only uses two cartridges: black and color. That's it.
As for these: - HP PG-40 black (355 pages) option
- HP CL-41 color (308 pages) option

That just means it's a larger volume package with more milliliters per unit. It doesn't mean there are four different colors.

Great, that’s exactly what I was suspecting, though I did have this nagging thought that those larger 28 ml PG-40 packs might actually have a higher volume than the printer could handle🙂
Is it possible to run the machine using only black ink?
Thanks a lot

Can I run it using just the black ink?
Thanks a lot.

It'll work.

I'm not entirely sure if you can get away with having just one black cartridge installed, because there's a good chance the printer will throw an error code at you.

However, you could try going into your print settings and selecting GREYSCALE. That should convert everything into a black-and-white mix, which means you'll only be draining the black ink.

Does anyone happen to know what the current going rate is for original ink colors for the HP OfficeJet?

Thanks so much!!

For the HP OfficeJet black $31 it’s the cheapest one I’ve come across, though I haven't had a chance to test out the colors yet.

I've run into a bit of a headache here; I picked up an HP Envy along with a PG-40 cartridge, but now the machine is just throwing error messages at me.
The specific item I grabbed is an EMSTAR PG-40 Black 28 ml C52 from Walmart, and while their website explicitly claims compatibility with the Envy, the actual packaging says it's intended for the iP1600/2200/MP150/170/450 models.
Is it possible this cartridge simply isn't meant for this particular printer?
It seems there are multiple variations of the PG-40 cartridge out there, which is making this whole thing incredibly frustrating.

I just realized I’ve been running PG-37 this whole time when the setting is actually for PG-40; does anything need to be adjusted on my end?

So, how does everyone feel about using third-party inks? I'm trying to figure out what the damage is going to be—specifically, what’s the current going rate for a generic black and a color set for the HP Envy?

From what I can gather, there aren't any compatible replacements available for the Envy

Goddammit, I am absolutely livid right now. A friend of mine sat there and swore up to heaven that these things actually existed for my HP Envy, acting like it was common knowledge, and now I’m sitting here feeling like a complete idiot for believing him. It is beyond frustrating! Does anyone know if there is even a shred of an alternative out there when it comes to refilling cartridges? Look, I’m just a college student trying to get through the semester, and between all the lecture notes, study guides, and endless handouts I have to print constantly, the cost is absolutely killing me. I can't keep spending a fortune just to stay on top of my coursework. $33And honestly, it’s even more frustrating because I’ve been stuck using third-party replacements for my HP i250 for ages now. $6.25...

Well, you should be able to refill them without any real trouble at all. In my estimation, it would likely cost you less than $33 black and color 👍

Andrew Richardson4 said:Man, I am seriously losing my mind here! A friend of mine kept insisting that there were compatible refills available for this HP printer, acting like it was no big deal, and now I’m just sitting here absolutely fuming. Honestly, I feel like such an idiot for believing him. Is there actually any kind of workaround out there, maybe something involving refilling the cartridges manually? I’m a college student, so I’m constantly stuck printing out endless stacks of study guides and lecture notes, and honestly, the cost of buying new ink every single week is just killing my budget. $33Honestly, I’ve been feeling even more relieved about this change, especially since I’ve spent so much time struggling to get decent results printing on my old HP i250 using nothing but cheap third-party replacements. $6.25...

So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and try refilling the cartridges on my HP ip4500, and honestly, things started off pretty well! I actually managed to pull it off twice without any issues, but after that second attempt, I hit a bit of a wall. Even though I know for a fact that I filled them up, the printer is still stubbornly insisting that it's completely out of ink. To try and fix this, I headed over to Walmart and picked up four refill bottles, but man, those things aren't exactly cheap! $1.75 Thanks so much! $6.75 I just picked up a four-pack of ink cartridges! 😂🙂

Can I get a little help here?

Everything was working fine on my printer this past Monday. By Tuesday, it suddenly decided to stop working altogether. It’s claiming I'm out of ink, but I know for a fact that isn't true—I just refilled the cartridges myself. If there were an issue with the chips on the cartridges, they wouldn't have worked on Monday either. I have no idea what went wrong overnight...

Does anyone have any advice? What should I try doing?🤷

The specs say it uses 4 inks, but you only get 2 in the box. Once I run out of the originals and grab replacements, can I run it just using those other two high-capacity ones (the option -> PG-40, CL-41) since they seem cheaper? I saw this PG-40 at an office supply store in 20ml and 28ml sizes—how does that work, will the bigger one actually fit?

So I’ve got this HP DeskJet, right? But it’s being a total pain... it won't print unless the color cartridges are full. That makes zero sense because I only need black right now. The black cartridge is totally full—I literally just swapped in a brand new one—but the machine keeps throwing an error saying the color ink is empty. 😠 I already tried messing with the settings, switching the ink cartridge settings to black only and setting the main print settings to grayscale, but nothing works. It just refuses. 😲 And get this... even if I take the color cartridge out entirely, it still won't budge. 😕🤷😕
