Honestly, you’d be doing yourself a favor by mounting the PSU above the GPUs instead of right on top of the CPU. If you stick it over the processor, that power supply is just going to end up sucking in all the hot air being exhausted from the 120mm fan behind the CPU, which isn't exactly great for cooling efficiency. Plus, giving the processors a little more breathing room for better airflow wouldn't hurt either.
You really ought to look at component layouts similar to what you'd see in a Home Theater PC, like a
something like this (though IMO, the execution here is kind of subpar):

A much cleaner setup, though it does demand a bit more real estate:

And then there's a third option—putting the PSU above the graphics cards. That could actually work quite well, provided you have a taller case to accommodate it (I couldn't track down a decent photo for 😁 ):

I’m thinking the PSU will end up sitting above the cards and the partition. I’ll get a sketch together soon, just gotta finish grading some papers first 🙈 😁 I might even hit up a buddy of mine who's a mechanical engineer to grab some help or run some designs through SolidWorks...

Just wanted to stir this thread up a little bit... I guess I was wondering what the best way is to cut plexiglass—specifically for making fan holes—and how one might go about mounting it to a case so it actually looks decent?

I’ve done straight cuts using nothing but a sharpened screwdriver. Basically, drill the corner holes first, then just guide it along a straightedge from point A to point B. You might be able to use a hacksaw if you make a custom cutting guide for it. Using a drill bit or anything like that is a nightmare because you have to be incredibly gentle, otherwise the plastic just starts melting everywhere.

As for mounting... are we talking about a side panel, like making a window? Honestly, I'd probably just go with some epoxy...

I usually just drill pilot holes in the corners and then guide a straightedge from one point to the next. I suppose you might get similar results with a seam ripper if you fashioned some kind of cutting guide for it, though. Using a drill bit or anything like that feels a bit risky, since you have to be incredibly careful not to melt the material.

To attach it... to the side panel, so you're basically cutting out a window? I guess I'd probably just use some epoxy for that...

True... but how would you go about drilling a 5-inch hole for a vent?

Instead of just hacking away at it with straight cuts, you could try using a compass. If you drill a tiny pilot hole right in the center to keep the point from slipping, then you can either score a line with a knife or just scratch a path with the compass tip. It makes the cut way cleaner—honestly, it’s basically perfect. You could even drill a circle and then just file it down from there...

Hey everyone

So I just slapped two 120mm fans onto the side panel of my case—but honestly, the cutouts look pretty rough. I’m trying to find some kind of trim or covers to hide those jagged edges. They don't even have to be round; I wouldn't mind cutting out some squares if that works better.

Anyone know where I can pick up something like that? Also looking for some mesh to keep the dust from getting sucked in everywhere.

I’ve already checked out the hardware side of things, but that’s not really what I’m looking for. Is there any shop in the New York City area that actually carries stuff specifically for PC Modding?

Maybe this is worth a look in Time Magazine.
Honestly, it's pretty damn hard to find anything better than what you can dig up from hardware forums.

Checked out that stuff too—nothing interesting there either. I’m actually thinking about ripping out those two 120mm fans and swapping them for a single 250mm one. Since I’ve already got two round holes in the chassis, I'd just cut out a square space to fit the bigger fan. My only real question is whether one 250mm fan is gonna be louder than the two 120mms, and what kind of thickness I should look for on a 250mm model. Only saw one case like that once, but I'm sure I can find something online.

Solid work👍
I’ve been following his stuff over on the forums, along with plenty of other cool builds.

I will post a photo of my rig sometime after July 19th, 2008. I still need to pick up a few more parts to finish the build. Cheers, and this is a great thread!👍👍

The imagination is a boundless, often exhausting thing; truly remarkable.

The imagery is 👍, though I suspect they may have pushed the concept just a bit too far 🤷

Whoops, looks like I've been running a month behind schedule... 😬
