Warner Bros. (ATP) in FC Barcelona, May 31 - June 2

A pass for all three days (including today) is about $95, but it jumps to $115 starting tomorrow.
I found a flight on Southwest Airlines from Venice to FC Barcelona if you go May 30th through June 3rd—it’s around $40 plus taxes. Parking at the airport is gonna run us about $8.
Hostels in the city are running maybe $25 a night. Honestly, if enough of us go, we might be better off just renting an Airbnb; prices are sitting around $55 a day.

Hanzaplast and I already grabbed our festival tickets. So, if anyone else is actually down to go (and even better, if you can drive us to the airport 😁), let me know here or shoot me a DM. We need to have the flights and the place sorted by the end of next week at the latest.

Man, I would kill to see about fifteen artists from this lineup... 😲

A fifteen-hour drive each way (or just grabbing a Southwest Airlines flight through New York City), the tickets, a Hotel for maybe three or four nights... you could probably pull it off for around $450 per person, plus whatever you blow on food, drinks, and random junk...

Anyone actually down for this?

Count me in too (+1), just trying to figure out how we even get there...

Maybe if about 10 of us pool together, we could just grab a charter van or something through an agency.

What else is there besides driving? Train? A budget airline? Bus?

Look, I’ve already counted at least 22 bands on this lineup that I would give anything to see live, and I’m certain there are several more tucked away in there... all while I don't have even twenty bucks to my name. I really shouldn't even be adding more to the list. 😢
Making it out there just once is the ultimate goal. It can't possibly be that impossible, right? Grrr... 😢

Venezia to FC Barcelona—just fly

From NYC, you can grab a train to Venice (Mestre), and from there, there's a decent bus that runs to the airport (Treviso).
If you're coming from somewhere like Philly, it's probably better to take a bus to Pittsburgh first and then catch a train.

Honestly though, the best way is just to drive to Treviso. :smart:

That festival is garbage, and the people running it are absolute snakes... especially when it comes to how they handle media credentials.

I have a feeling there was a thread about this year's Primavera, but neither Google nor the forum search can seem to find it. 🤷

Here is how little Lalet felt at Primavera back in 2009:

THE FESTIVAL ITSELF - surprised by the amount of dead concrete. Sure, it’s by the ocean, but they managed to pave over everything possible. Even out in the middle of nowhere feels nicer than this 😕 Beer was a tolerable 4 bucks for half a liter, though I have no idea how they fit a declared half-liter into those tiny 12-ounce cups 🤔 Not sure how many people were there, just know there weren't many attractive ones. Saw some great shirts—Radio Birdman, Naked Raygun, Hammerhead, The Cramps, and maybe sixty copies of Sonic Youth's "Goo."

DAY ONE BANDS

Women - decent, grinding indie pop; it wouldn't hurt if the band members actually looked alive
The Bats - the festival's best surprise. Beautiful New Zealand pop with actual history and prestige that I wasn't aware of. Anyway, lovely older guys and gals, lovely songs, all lovely... planning on becoming a fan
Vaselines - better than expected. If I had bothered to get within half a mile of the stage, they probably would have been even better. Their Nirvana cover was solid, and the rest of the set was mostly good, especially the punkier stuff. They were funny between songs, mostly in a good way.
Yo La Tengo - could only catch the first thirty minutes before needing to rush to see Lizards, and of course, in those thirty minutes they did: a) fifteen minutes of feedback-heavy noise just for the sake of it, b) two new songs, and c) one song I know (luckily "Autumn Sweater," which I love; unfortunately, I haven't heard singing that out of tune in ages, and I am currently listening to Dinosaur Jr to recover). Despite all that, those thirty minutes were excellent. I feel terrible I couldn't stay until the end
The Jesus Lizard - the reason I paid for the entrance fee $400 I mean, how could you not? Mac plays more and better than he does on cassette. Yow, man. Duane looks like David Byrne. Sims wasn't wearing short shorts 😢 On Duane's amp LED display, it was flashing Happy New Year. 😍 They played "Dudley," "Mouth Breather," "Bloody Mary," "7 vs 8," "Wheelchair Epidemic," "Thumper," "Destroy Before Reading," "Seasick," "Gladiator," "Puss," "Glamorous," and probably "Killer McHann," though I can never remember the sequence. Unfortunately, they only got 50 minutes (five more than Vivian Girls 🙂). I'd love to see them again, maybe at a club like the Bowery or something
Andrew Bird - the ultimate distraction. This guy with a violin and a synthesizer drew ten times the crowd of the aforementioned best band in the history of best bands 🙏 I lasted ten minutes before sitting down to stare into space instead (more interesting!)
My Bloody Valentine - a nuisance and a bore. Vocals were inaudible, constant screeching from the feedback. At certain points, I felt an unbearable urge to reach for my old hunting rifle. I watched until the end only because of the woman. It won't happen again.

Posting this on day two so I don't lose track of my sarcasm...

DAY TWO RECAP

Crystal Stilts - music that's a mediocre imitation of Roy Orbison; an awful band to witness. The singer acts like a superstar behind sunglasses, yet I could probably name at least four items in my fridge that possess more charisma than him. Total noise makers. I hate them.
Bat for Lashes - a lovely woman making music that simply isn't for me. She had an excellent drummer, too bad he was barely audible over the idiotic techno sounds the synth player kept blasting over EVERYTHING CONSTANTLY. Left after the third set.
Vivian Girls - about twenty minutes of great playing—shame they played forty-five. It's been a long time since I've seen a band start so solidly only to end so unnecessarily. The guitarist was exceptionally hot in those short shorts, which was a pleasant surprise—honestly, I only watched them until the end because of her... 😁
Tokyo Sex Destruction - Spanish soul fingers. God help us. Left after the first set.
Carsick Cars - some demo band from rural Ohio. God help us. Left after the first set.
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - more like the pains of being untalented at songwriting. Pleasant career-pop where I couldn't remember the choruses EVEN WHILE THEY WERE HAPPENING! 🙏 🙏 🙏
Throwing Muses - I assume they were booked because Nickelback and Alanis Morissette were too expensive? A tragedy.
The Drones - uninteresting rock...
Fucked Up - uninspired hardcore punk that feels like a desperate grab for relevance, because it would be truly stupid if there wasn't a single subculture left in this world that hasn't been hijacked by guys with asymmetrical hair, mustaches, and women's Levi's. The heavy-set singer spent most of the set leaning into the crowd, while eleven (11—count them!) cameramen and photographers spent most of the show on stage (standing right in front of the band, obviously, because why would anyone actually want to see the band at their own concert?) filming the crew "capturing" a supposedly "punk" concert. I've seen the death of punk many times, but this was the most painful... PLEASE JUST DISBAND ALREADY :2up:
Shellac - naturally the highlight of the night (not that they had to work for it). I want to raise Todd as my child. Steve was his usual charmingly pissed-off self; after the set, he went back onto the stage with a camera—I was worried he’d get carried away and start snapping photos of the crowd, but instead, he just yelled, "this is a piece of shit, does anybody want this fuckin' piece of shit?" and tossed it into the audience. Absolutely precious... 😍
Bloc Party - boring men. I don't like them. I didn't like them when they sounded like Gang of Four, and god knows I won't like them now that they sound like Simple Minds...

Man, you are an absolute beast on the court. Seriously, props to you!

Personally, I think the festival grounds are fantastic; that view of the water is just everything 🙂
and it isn't all just concrete—there's plenty of grass too 😁



And the ATP stage with that embankment setup is great (though, okay, after one day it starts smelling pretty gross because everyone ends up peeing right there 😬)

Vaselines... now that's something I'd actually want to see. I caught a Eugene Kelly solo set once and it was 👍
