What does music mean to you?

I’m starting this thread because I know plenty of people who feel the exact same way I do about music—that it's basically a drug, that it triggers these intense emotions, or even acts like medicine. Honestly, I'm right there with them. Some people even claim it's becoming the new religion 😕
Whenever I don't have something playing, I get seriously cranky. Like, everywhere I go, I HAVE to have my headphones in just to stay sane. It's the only thing that chills me out
. And yeah, I'm constantly hunting for a charger because my phone's gotta be at 100% every single night 😂
One time, I was heading back from Western Union and my headphones were acting up. We were only driving for maybe 15 minutes, but when I tried to hit play and nothing happened, I absolutely lost it 😠. I got so worked up I actually started crying. My friend was just staring at me like I was losing my mind—she clearly doesn't get the whole music addiction thing. I was a total wreck for the rest of the night and could barely even fall asleep 😢
Don't give me any stupid answers. I genuinely want to know if anyone else is out there like me, or if I'm actually crazy and need to go see a shrink 😂 😢

Well, just like anything else... too much of a good thing can actually be a bad thing.
I love music—seriously, I live for it—but honestly? My headphones have been out of commission for a few days now because I managed to lose them, and I’m not even feeling that restless, frantic itch.
That's what you call a music addiction 😁

I’m a huge fan of listening to music—mostly because those rhythms and melodies have such a massive impact on my mental and physical state!🙂

Honestly, I don't even know... I just listen out of habit, really. Like, I don't actually have anything I'm super into or anything.

Honestly, I think I would’ve completely lost my mind a long time ago if it weren't for music. 😁 I just can't wrap my head around being one of those passive listeners who treats tunes like nothing more than background noise where the actual content doesn't even matter. 🙂

4 words:music is my life😁
I honestly can’t picture myself doing anything without some kind of music playing in the background.
No matter what time of day it is—whenever the situation allows for a second of peace😁—the music is always there.
Especially over the last couple of years, it’s become this essential, non-negotiable part of my daily routine.😁

Just like most of those sudden extreme trends that pop up out of nowhere, this whole new obsession with music really rubs me the wrong way... It’s honestly kind of sad seeing people who can't even make a quick trip to the grocery store without their headphones on, it's just pathetic...

Music has always been huge for me too, but I guess I managed to turn that whole thing you're describing into something actually positive.
I remember going through a phase just like yours—it was basically a total music addiction. It lasted for years, maybe more, and it ebbed and flowed. I'd have music playing at home, in the car, even if I was staying at a Marriott or some Airbnb where there wasn't a decent stereo system, I'd freak out. It was a real issue.
Eventually, though, I broke that habit of needing constant background noise. Now, I try to listen more intentionally, you know? It’s about quality over quantity. These days, I can actually sit in silence or just listen to the sounds of the city or nature without feeling restless. I don't feel this desperate need to escape reality by drowning everything out with sound anymore. Instead, I'll put on a good vinyl record or a CD and really *listen*. I go to live shows more often now, and then I actually give myself space to let the music sink in afterward. In the car, I only listen sometimes. And while I'm working, I usually stay quiet so I can focus... maybe I'll put something on if I'm doing something mindless, but that's about it.
The best part, honestly? I haven't used earbuds in ages. That's probably for the best since they can mess up your hearing, and I definitely need my hearing intact if I want to actually enjoy music when I'm being intentional about it. 😁
P.S. Come to think of it, a much better title for this thread would probably be "music addiction."

I can honestly say that if I didn't have music in my life, I'm not even sure what I'd do.
Maybe it's just a habit, but it feels like the kind of music addiction that might actually be harder to break than a drug.

Music is quite literally my entire existence. Whether I am heading to class, sitting through a break, or spiraling into a deep depressive episode, there is always a soundtrack playing in my ears.
If it weren’t for my music addiction, I would actually have to endure the sheer misery of everyday life.

I honestly have no idea what criteria we’re using to define what actually qualifies as "music" these days, but hey, if people want to listen to that noise, more power to them.

Music is basically my entire life. I’m constantly listening to something, though I don't exactly need headphones while I'm hitting the restroom... 😂

I mean, does it need a melody? Some actual notes? That’s what I call music, anyway... but maybe that's just me being too narrow-minded, right? 🤷Actually, no, that's just you being closed off.

Jason Richardson5 said:Is there any actual melody involved here? Any discernible notes at all? To me, if it lacks those elements, it simply isn't music. But then again, perhaps that’s just my perspective. If you find yourself unable to see it that way, well, that sounds more like a personal deficiency on your part than a critique of the art itself. Is it a lack of musicality, or are you just being incredibly narrow-minded? 🤷
Let’s face it: ninety-five percent of what passes for "music" these days is nothing more than some amateur clicking away on a laptop. It’s all sterile, programmed, and utterly soulless. Where is the grit? Where is the heart? That remaining five percent—that tiny, precious sliver of raw, human wailing—is the only thing that actually matters. Is anyone even listening anymore, or have we all just become obsessed with perfection over passion?
So, let me get this straight: I can simply grab some household appliances, manipulate them until they emit certain sounds, weave in some nonsensical verses, and—presto!—I’ve somehow birthed a song? Is that really all it takes these days? It sounds utterly absurd, doesn't it? One minute you're staring at a blender or a toaster, and the next, you're supposedly an artist. Where does the actual craft go in all this chaos?
I’ll admit, I only tolerate that mindless pop garbage when I’m at a party—mostly because I have zero interest in being the resident killjoy—but let’s be honest: that isn't music. It simply isn't.

haha, so I guess all electronic "music" is basically garbage then because it’s 99% made on some crappy computer 🙄

My apologies if I overstepped—I suppose if someone uses actual instruments during the songwriting process (aside from an accordion, of course), I should offer my sincerest regrets.
But seriously,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2uTR0LsRNU — when I mentioned things being done on a computer, I wasn't talking about *that* kind of setup.
