Hey there,
I'm dealing with some major internet issues... specifically my Wi-Fi.
I've got an iPhone 6 (only three months old) and I'm running an Xfinity Gateway from Verizon.
Everything works perfectly on my desktop when I'm plugged in via Ethernet, but my phone? Total disaster. It shows as connected all the time, but then it’s either painfully slow or just sits there spinning forever without loading a single thing. There are these tiny, rare moments where it actually works, but you can't count on it.
I tried running a speed test on my phone, and honestly, the numbers look fine—download is at 11.47 mbps and upload is 2.60 mbps.
I have zero clue what the deal is here. 🙂

Just test it with another Wi-Fi device standing about 1-2 meters from the Xfinity Gateway. If the connection still sucks, call customer service and demand a replacement because the hardware is clearly busted. ☕

Being within one or two feet of my router is useless to me... I’m not exactly going to be standing right next to it just to get some signal on my phone while I'm moving around the house.

It’s just testing. If you’ve got the thing sitting two feet away and it's still acting up, then the router is just in the wrong spot for what you need. Move it closer to where you actually want the signal... 🙂

Maybe try testing it with a different device, like others have already suggested?
Have you tried the classic move of just turning the modem off and back on again?
You could also give technical support a call and ask them to perform a factory reset on the modem before trying again.

One of those steps should hopefully get everything back on track for you!👍

Tried switching to my other phone, but honestly, it’s the exact same headache. I even hit that little reset button on the back of the Xfinity Gateway... total waste of time.
I moved it up onto the hallway shelf, too. Most of the time I’m just hanging out in my room, which is maybe ten feet from the modem, with just a door standing between us.
Even right now, while I’m typing this, the whole thing is lagging. That signal icon looks full, but those little arrows underneath? They’re acting possessed. Both of them pop up at once, then vanish for ten seconds, then repeat. It’s not like normal Wi-Fi where they actually cycle properly.
Whatever. Looks like I'll have to call Verizon and deal with that mess.

Unlike a hardwired LAN connection, Wi-Fi is always going to deal with interference. It’s not just your own gadgets clashing; you’ve got all those neighbors nearby broadcasting signals that mess with yours too.
Grab an app for your phone that shows you the channel status and signal strength for all the local Wi-Fi networks. Check it out by your router to see which channel has the weakest signals, then run the same check in your room. You’ll want to jump onto whichever channel has the least amount of noise. Once you find it, log into your router settings and manually set it to that specific channel instead of leaving it on "auto." Save the changes, give it a shot, and see if things smooth out.

You could actually handle all of this using a school computer or a laptop
they can scan to see which channel is currently active and identify which ones are the most congested in her neighborhood.

If I were you, I’d just download the Network Manager app onto your phone and fire it up; it’ll give you a clear breakdown of which channels your neighbors are hogging, so you can just head into your router settings and pick one of those wide-open lanes that isn't crowded.

And what would be the criteria for everything functioning correctly—if she managed to run a successful speedtest on her phone? Also, what was the specific ping you were seeing on the mobile device?
