Respect to Jazz. But I’m talking about that real deal—the stuff coming out of New Orleans. Most Americans don't even know what actual jazz is anymore. 😢

I mean, look, an average American guy—standard build, maybe 5'11" and around 200 pounds—who’s busting his tail at work all day, and then if he actually wants to go out and hook up with someone later that night, there is no way he’s getting anything done on 1,400 or even 1,700 calories a day...

When I factor in hitting the gym, working a 12-hour shift, maybe some physical activity with a girlfriend, plus all the stress from work and home... yeah, on 1,400 calories, I can't even sleep properly...

Someone taller and heavier is obviously going to need more fuel...
but I didn't even account for fitness or whatever, because I guess that doesn't count toward "average" caloric needs.

Those "average" needs you're talking about? That's just what a guy burns while he's sleeping.

What are you even talking about? Is that just the energy needed to pump blood through your veins and breathe? 1300 kcal? If I remember right, a teenage girl needs way more than that. 😁 😁 😁 I think I saw a number like 1800 somewhere, but I can't be bothered to go look up those charts right now.

I think I dug up this data from some spreadsheets somewhere... though it’s based on a much shorter height than mine (I mean, I'm definitely not just 4'11")...
but my point was that if you're doing average daily chores for about an hour, you end up burning more than 10% of your total daily calorie needs.

I don't know about that. If people actually kept a food diary for a day or two and saw the actual calorie counts they were swallowing...

Look, if you aren't gaining weight or losing it, you're probably hitting the sweet spot.

I wouldn't know, placidfox55, but I haven't really noticed Americans having a massive craving for soda. Most people here seem much more focused on their coffee. Only someone completely misguided would actually believe an industrial soft drink is even remotely comparable to fresh fruit.

Honestly, I think people everywhere have just lost their minds. It seems to me the real issue is that so many people are struggling with depression and general dissatisfaction, so they try to fill that void with endless amounts of junk food.

Look, calorie needs aren't one-size-fits-all; they depend entirely on your gender, height, and weight.

Personally, I barely touch the stuff, and I absolutely loathe Coke, 👎
but let's be real: it's just a massive pile of empty calories.
And the truth is, we've been bombarded by advertisements for decades to the point where we've started viewing certain junk foods as a total MUST.
But why act surprised? 😁 We're basically just reinventing the wheel here. 😁

We both know that. But there's a massive group of kids out there who aren't spending enough time at home to learn that from their parents. Instead, they're being schooled by commercials everywhere—in the gym, at clubs, on TV, or just walking down the street...

Ask them why they’re slamming energy drinks while they're hitting the weights at the gym. Is it to give them more stamina for their workout? If it wasn't so pathetic, it would be hilarious.

I hear you, but I suppose I'm just being naive by ignoring how incredibly foolish some people can be...

It makes me wonder when we reached this level of sheer excess and decadence...😕

Yeah, I get that, but I think people just use this as a rough average. Seriously, I don't know anyone who actually sits down and calculates their basal metabolic rate, then adds in precisely how many minutes they spent walking to the bus stop + sitting around + standing up + watching TV + vacuuming + ...
to figure out exactly what they need to eat.

placidfox55 said:We don't have a massive obesity problem yet, but over the last decade, the number of overweight people in the US has shot up dramatically. We seriously need to start watching every unnecessary calorie we take in:

- sipping on Orange Juice just because we're bored (why not just have blueberry tea instead?)
- Coca-Cola, Sprite, ... (what's missing from diet soda or the caffeine hit from tea/coffee?)
- any kind of sugary snacks (why not apple slices with almonds instead?)
[/B]

I don't really sweat the calories since my husband and I are thin, though our kid is a bit chubby—but not from the stuff listed above. My concern is food quality. Most of what was mentioned is basically junk grown on industrial mega-farms loaded with pesticides...
so; I make my own juice with a juicer, I only have soda a few times a year (everyone's pushing it right now for the holidays 😬), and you can easily swap snacks for walnuts or almonds (like the boss suggested)... I let my two-year-old clean up her own mess into a bowl; she sets it down, watches cartoons, and munches away...😍

Eating healthy is hands down the best way to go. But let’s be real—life moves way too fast most days to actually stick to some perfect wellness routine... And here’s the kicker, the total Paradox: the industry loves to exploit that whole "healthy living" craze. It’s infuriating how unprocessed, actual good food costs a fortune, while all that junk loaded with chemicals just to make it last longer or taste fake is dirt cheap...

To be honest, I don't know a single soul who actually sits down and calculates their basal metabolic rate, then adds in ten minutes of walking to the bus stop, plus sitting time, plus standing time, plus watching TV, plus vacuuming... all that junk.
so they just roughly estimate how much they need to eat.

Honestly, anyone who’s maintained a healthy weight for most of their life and actually listens to what their body is telling them doesn't need to do any of that math. And frankly, that's how it should be.

On the flip side, though, I guess it’s a useful tool for people who have a messed up relationship with food—you know, those who can't tell the difference between actual hunger and just being bored, or people who barely move at all. Either way, it’s definitely better than following those insane fad diets or just starving yourself.🙂
