Sanda means free fighting—basically a Chinese take on MMA that blends kickboxing-style striking with wrestling. I think they only score the takedowns and skip the ground game you see in actual MMA, though I’d have to double-check that part.

Basically, Sanda is the Chinese take on MMA—you've got the striking from kickboxing mixed with wrestling (I think they only score the takedowns and skip the ground game, but I'd have to double-check that...).

Sanda is a hybrid—looks like boxing handwork, karate and TKD footwork, plus takedowns from shuai jiao (kind of like Chinese judo but without the ground fighting). Officially, they claim the top masters back in the '60s blended the best Kung Fu techniques to create Sanda... though you don't really see that happening. Per the rules, alongside standard kickboxing (low kicks, I guess), they allow elbows, arm locks, and throws. You can clinch, but only for a split second.

In a loose translation, Sanda means free fighting.

Anyway, Sanda fighters haven't exactly made a name for themselves against Muay Thai guys. Plus, they're usually absolute trash on the ground—at least based on the few videos I've watched...

I actually think it was the other way around—that the Sanda guys were pulling off wins mostly because of their takedowns and throws, though I can't be entirely certain myself.
