VLC media player

So, I went ahead and grabbed VLC media player from CNET, but for some reason, I'm hitting a wall and can't get the installation to finish because of some... genuine

Does anyone happen to know what might be causing this?

Honestly, you really shouldn't have gone stripping out those one-line Windows updates because that’s exactly what happened to me, and I ended up having to wipe everything and reinstall Windows from scratch just to get Windows Media Player 11 running without any errors again.

I actually managed to get it installed even though I'm running an unlicensed version of Windows. You need to grab a setup that's split into a few different parts. I don't have the exact download link on hand, but I grabbed mine from http://www.phazeddl.com/

Run wmfdist11.exe, give your PC a quick reboot, and then launch Windows Media Player 11—assuming you haven't already deleted it, of course...
Honestly, though, Windows Media Player 11 is absolute garbage. You really ought to download something more competent, but if you insist on sticking with that player, at least grab a decent visualization like G-Force to make it bearable.

What specifically are you supposed to download from there?

I don't know. It took me a few tries just to get that split version downloaded myself. Check those forums where they're hosted; you might find it there.

I’m curious—is there actually a plugin for Windows Media Player 10 or 11 that lets me broadcast what I’m watching? I want my status on MSN Messenger to update automatically when I'm playing music videos, similar to how it works when you're just listening to MP3s in WMP and everyone can see your tracklist. Does anything like that even exist????

All I'm looking for is whether there's some kind of plugin for WMP—specifically for when I'm watching music videos or movies—that will update my MSN Messenger status to show what I'm viewing. I already know about the plugin for MP3s; when I'm listening to music, it shows up on Messenger just fine, but I need this to work for video content!!

I guess I still rely on Microsoft for my day-to-day viewing—just for just about everything—whereas maybe VLC Media Player is what I turn to when things won't play in Microsoft... mostly because the interface is such a headache
