The Ten Hunters from the area near
are facing animal cruelty charges. According to the DOJ, they
gathered near the Hills near Greenwood in late February, tied up six cockerels, and
spent about 20 minutes shooting them with hunting rifles.#L#
The hunters, ranging in age from 34 to 76, are accused of gathering
in late February for a Mardi Gras celebration in the
Hills near Greenwood. There, they reportedly tied six cockerels
to stakes and spent roughly 20 minutes shooting at them from
about a hundred meters away using hunting rifles.
"Some cockerels were killed while others were wounded, frantically
trying to dodge the gunfire. Those that survived the bullets
were slaughtered on the spot by the accused,"
the Department of Justice stated on its website.
According to the DOJ, the investigation was prompted by an article in Free Dalmatia
titled "shooting squad for the tethered cockerel," which detailed how members of the
Tijarica hunting club were killing the birds.
The club's president told a reporter that this was simply a matter of tradition.
Under the law, animal cruelty can result in fines or
up to six months in prison. The local District Attorney's Office
has filed a proposal asking the court to fine each hunter
an amount equivalent to 30 average daily wages.
Interestingly, while these ten hunters were targeting the birds, the Mediterranean Coast
was dealing with an outbreak of bird flu, specifically involving
the death of an infected swan near Charleston.
