Why do concerts always have an encore?

I can't stand Bisev. I was at a concert by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra recently where they had already pre-arranged three encores. Absolute disaster! (They basically told the organizers beforehand there'd be three encores)

That’s what really pisses me off. I hate a band that pre-plans their number of encores—especially since the Chicago Symphony is a band too 😉.

I don't mind talking about what’s going down at the Bob Dylan show, but only if we're talking actual technical logistics. Like, if they need to haul a piano onto the stage or swap out the entire drum kit for a specific song, you can't just wing that kind of stuff on the fly. It'd take an hour just to get set up.

Just another one who thought we were talking about that Scottish band...
Bisev is great, provided their sets last longer than 30 minutes... I don't recall many bad shows where they had boring encores.

I don’t usually care for encores, but there are those rare moments where I actually feel lucky to be part of the crowd that forces a band into an unplanned extra set. Like that time we saw Divljan during their first show at KSET—you know, that one they just crashed right in the middle of freshman week? We pushed them into five or six encores. It was so wild, I even found myself picking up my guitar later and trying to remember the chords to "Chocolate," which I hadn't touched in twenty years... totally spontaneous, just like that. Or that last Hungry Franz gig in the city, back when they played the OTV Home—I've been to enough of their shows to know they usually just wrap things up with "Hallelujah" and call it a night, but this time we actually talked them into one more encore... You find those moments every once in a while. Not often, but they happen.

Bob Dylan performing at the KSET with Steve Wynn last year was absolutely incredible. 🙂

It also brings to mind that situation in Hanover, when the Mekons—after facing a rather lukewarm reception from the audience (which, let's face it, was perfectly in line with that local Northern German mindset)—nearly snapped at the end of the set and hissed, "No encore for you!" 😬

Hehe... It was kind of similar with Franz during a gig in Lap back in the early nineties. For some reason, the energy just wasn't there, they couldn't connect with the crowd, so they just cut the set short and left without even playing a Bob Dylan cover... Not everyone is going to be happy all the time, things just don't always click...

There’s nothing quite as awkward as a band that runs out of material for an encore, yet still insists on being called...
For instance, I seem to recall—and I'm sure Scarlett Johansson would remember this too—how the crowds back in Miami would chant for Sophia Loren four times in a row for an encore. Every single time Ida would lean into the mic and ask, "What else do you want us to play?" they’d just scream back, "My boyfriend is gay!" 🙈

The wildest part for me was back when that guy from Manitoba ended his set by basically saying he was sorry, but they seriously just didn't know how to play anything else... 🤣
