To me, she’s always been quite clearly the weakest link at IBM.

She can't play a lick, and her vocals? Not even close.

I’m a Kim fan myself—I mean, I kind of enjoy her being extra. A lot of her stuff just hits right for me. Brother James, brother James! 😬

I think "Ting" is such a killer track. It hits different. She might not be a technical vocalist by any means, but I’ve always gravitated toward singers who lack polish but have that raw, goosebump-inducing grit in their voice. Those kinds of voices tend to rub people the wrong way, which is totally fine—Joanna Newsom is the perfect example. That bass line is freaking heavy, too. Super cool. She’s definitely not my type physically, but she’s got this dark, magnetic charisma, kind of like PJ Harvey or Patti Smith. Honestly, she probably has sharp metal teeth or something. Whatever, I love it.
But like I said, I’d pick Kim Deal over her any day. If even she isn't your vibe (what is actually wrong with you guys?! :P), then go with Brian Wilson.

I don't actually think indie music was cooked up in some sterile, airtight environment or that it represents some grand revolution. That’s just not true. I know pop history inside and out, and I’d be a complete moron to claim otherwise. I love the classics. I love Bob Dylan. I absolutely adore Pentangle—like, seriously, I love them. *Revolver*, *VU & NICO*, and *Pet Sounds* are easily in my top 20 albums of all time. Brian Eno is hands down one of the top five producers ever. And so on. Honestly... it doesn't matter what kind of music it is, when it was made, or who listens to it. All that matters is whether you dig it or not. Well, personally? I don't dig the Grateful Dead. In fact, I hate them. From the bottom of my heart. It doesn't matter that they influenced a ton of awesome bands; I still can't stand them. I'm not trying to discredit their influence or downplay how big they are, I just want to say that to me personally, they are absolute garbage, and I get a headache every time I hear them (it's even worse with the Stones or Maiden).
I think this personal take on music is the only one worth having. No academic stuff, nothing politically correct. I care about passion and emotion, and that's the only level I'll discuss anything on (even if talking at that level makes no sense beyond just rambling). So yeah.

I guess a lot of how people view music just comes down to what clicks with them personally... I see everyone throwing album titles around and all that, which is fine, and look, I’ll be the first to admit that the Grateful Dead didn't exactly drop a mountain of studio masterpieces, so I get why some folks aren't feeling them. But my whole approach to music is more about that bootleg energy, you know? I’ve always been obsessed with artists who constantly reinvent their own sound, like Bob Dylan, or those jam bands that just live for the moment, and generally anything that feels raw, unpolished, and improvised 🙂

At the end of the day, I respect whatever anyone else is into.
Deep down, though, I'm still a total hippie 😉

Personally, I think SY is at their absolute best when Kim is singing. That cold vocal style they have just gives them this unique edge, lifting them way above all that unnecessary noise they sometimes fall into.

And regarding Dead, it's mostly true that you really need to dig into the bootlegs rather than the studio albums. But honestly, the closer they get to that country and blues sound—and stay away from those space-narcissist jams—the better they get. Honestly, "Me and my uncle" alone is enough to make up for two years of total garbage.
