Can you donate blood after smoking weed?

So, I've been chewing on this question lately: is there any actual risk involved in donating blood if you happen to use marijuana? I’m mostly wondering if it poses any danger to the person receiving the transfusion.

A few days ago, I got a call asking if I could swing by to donate—I've done it once before—but I panicked a bit and told them I was on antibiotics just to get out of it. I wasn't entirely sure if my blood would be safe to use, and honestly, what's the point of doing a good deed if it ends up being harmful to someone else? That would turn a kind gesture into a really bad one.

If there happens to be a medical professional here who can weigh in, I'd really appreciate the insight. 😁

They once sent me a letter claiming they’d flagged some nonsense in my bloodwork—demanding I show up for more testing. I went back a few days later and everything turned out fine. They didn't even bother mentioning the sender 😬

I’m honestly a little worried about the recipient and whether this could backfire on them... though, personally, I couldn't care less if some doctor calls me up to tell me they found something weird in my bloodwork...

I’m an adult, so legally they aren't allowed to call my parents without my permission anyway. 🤣

Blood has to pass rigorous testing first—if there's even a hint of an issue, it won't be used. Don't worry about the recipient; they're covered.

When I went to donate blood with my school group through the Red Cross, we had to fill out this whole intake form first... and honestly, I can't recall if there was a specific section about drug use. 🤔 It might have been in there, along with questions about sexual partners, recent surgeries, piercings, and stuff like that.

And no, they wouldn't take my blood. 😠 Before anyone starts judging, just know it's because I was dealing with anemia. 😬 And I actually really wanted to do it... 😢

I couldn't make the school trip because I was stuck on a round of antibiotics at the time, but when I went back on my own about a week later, they didn't even hand me a questionnaire 😕 ...

They just ran a quick iron check, confirmed my blood type, and called it a day...

I suspect I could detect THC in the bloodwork, though the real question is whether they’ll actually go looking for it. I’m not entirely sure what the legalities are regarding whether they're obligated—or even allowed—to disclose if someone tested positive. That said, I imagine it’s probably in your best interest not to leave a paper trail of marijuana use floating around for everyone to see.

As for the recipient, there’s a chance they might experience some odd reactions to the interaction between THC and their medication. We're talking unexpected symptoms that don't quite fit their usual profile, which doctors might misinterpret—assuming any significant amount is even circulating in the bloodstream.
If you're planning on sharing the high, just give people the courtesy of a choice. Pass the joint instead of the blood.

The survey just asks if you've ever done drugs intravenously. That’s literally the only drug question they have.

Hey, what was that other question again? Something about whether I'd spent more than six months in the UK at one point? I can't remember when.

They blacklisted me forever and I haven't even touched drugs. 😢

As far as I know, that UK thing is tied to Mad Cow Disease, but maybe I'm tripping.🤔
