Better late than never, I guess.
About a year ago, he mentioned in an interview that he probably only had about seven years left in him, at most.
It looks like he might have been spot on, because—if you listen to the rumors swirling around—his health has taken a real turn for the worse (apparently, Paul Thomas Anderson was actually stepping in to help him out on his last film set).
It’s such a shame, really, because the man is a true legend. He was basically the godfather of all those Hollywood mavericks.
He was this incredibly self-assured iconoclast whose biggest flaws were somehow also his greatest strengths. Honestly, he was so one-of-a-kind that if he hadn't existed, we'd probably have to invent someone just like him.
