Spotting between periods: what's normal?

I’ve been on the pill for years with zero issues—it usually treats me just fine. But I totally blanked on starting my new pack because finals week absolutely wrecked me. Four days went by before I even realized, so I figured I'd just skip that missed pack entirely and wait until my next period to start fresh. That’s what I did, but now I’m getting this weird spotting—just some light, brownish discharge—between my last period and this upcoming one.
Is this normal, or should I be heading to the doctor? Has anyone dealt with this, or maybe there's a doc here who can weigh in? Thanks.👋

I had something pretty similar happen to me this month. I’ve been on unknown for years now, and I’m usually super strict about it—I take my pill at the exact same time every single day, no exceptions.
Then, after just a week into a new pack, I realized I’d actually missed two days. I went right back to my regular routine immediately after noticing, but then a few days later, I started bleeding. It felt just like my actual period, even though I’d already had one two weeks ago. It lasted about three or four days, basically just like a real period would.
Now I’m honestly just confused. I have no clue when my next one is supposed to show up. Is it 28 days from that last period two weeks ago, or am I counting 28 days from this random bleeding that just happened? And, I guess, is my protection even reliable right now?

This actually happened to me while I was using Cilest. I reached out to my OB-GYN, and they basically told me to just swing by the office to pick up a prescription for a different brand since my current pills had become "too weak" to do the job. So, I made the switch to the new ones, and honestly, everything has been fine so far...
