Ethan Perez28 - so you're telling me the Chicago underground duos and trios aren't actually bands?
And what about the Tamara Obrovac Ensemble... they aren't a band either?
Wait, is Kammerflimmer Kollektief not a band?
Is the Dave Brubeck Quartet not even a band?
Man, I am clearly living in a total delusion here...

I’ve honestly never heard anyone call a string quartet playing classical music a "band" unless they were clearly making a joke, but hey, whatever floats your boat...πŸ™„

By the way, even the Chicago Underground Quartet is considered a bandπŸ˜‰ but those guys are jazz musicians, not classical

Look, I’m not trying to mock you or anything, it just struck me as pretty funny😁

And what on earth is supposed to be "enhancing the experience" about them? They’re just miserable, rainy messes...

Look, why is everyone jumping down her throat calling her conceited? She wasn't trying to be malicious, and honestly, she’s probably the only one on this entire board who actually picks up on what’s going on here.πŸ™„

btw. even the Chicago Underground Quartet is called a band,πŸ˜‰ but they're jazzers.

Look, I'm not making fun of you. It just caught me off guard...😁

If they're playing classical or chamber music, it isn't a band.πŸ˜‰

They aren't performing as a "band," or whatever, which is exactly my point, isn't it?πŸ˜‰

I really thought I was going to learn something new here, but apparently not. They aren't exactly "classical purists," which is pretty much their whole deal anyway.
Let's take a quick look at AllMusic.
"No one seems quite clear as to whether they're a classical group with jazz and populist leanings, or a populist band with classical expertise."

So they aren't exactly "bands" 😁 regardless of how you look at it. πŸ˜‰

There’s a massive gap between a pop, rock, or free jazz outfit and more traditional global music... though free jazz is really the gray area. You have everything from free jazz bands to trios, quartets, or even full symphonies... 😁

Ethan Perez28, shadowgardener12, seriously, you guys need to take a much closer look at what Kronos Quartet is actually doing... they play everything under the sun. You’ve got them tucked away under Classical, sure, but then you see them listed under Pop too. It's not like I have every single discography memorized, but it's pretty obvious they're tackling Bill Evans, Hendrix, Bollywood, African rhythms... you name it...
I honestly have no clue what kind of nonsense you're spinning or what logic leads you to believe they "should" only ever be labeled as a classical quartet!
Besides, no matter how much you argue, it's all just a waste of breath... πŸ˜πŸ™„

Not sure what they're actually playing, but I know the difference between a free jazz band and a quartet, so I’m speaking theoretically here πŸ˜‰

It doesn't matter if they cover Hendrix.

My favorite group plays everything from Kraftwerk πŸ‘, to folk tunes, to Indian ragasβ€”and they're just a trio πŸ˜‰
with two violins and a double bass.

They do chamber and classical stuff too... though they were at their best when they mashed up Bond with some light nocturnes by Mozart. Total virtuosos.

Sure, you could technically call them a quartet if you want to get all technical about it, but i honestly, they function just as much as a full-blown band. Besides, repeating the exact same words over and over in a single sentence is just terrible writing... πŸ˜›

And here I was, thinking the whole debate over the divide between high and low culture had become completely irrelevant...
You clearly aren't much for double bass or chamber music, are you?
