According to the latest semi-annual security threat report released by Norton yesterday, browsers built on Mozilla code are actually sporting more vulnerabilities than Internet Explorer. To get specific, Norton identified 21 distinct flaws within Firefox, whereas Internet Explorer was "only" riddled with 13. While it might not feel that way right now—since the actual malware exploiting these holes is still far more prevalent on Explorer than on Firefox—that dynamic could shift rapidly as Firefox continues its climb in popularity.

Apple enthusiasts might take some comfort in hearing that Norton researchers failed to find any vulnerabilities in Safari, Apple's flagship browser, though they did manage to uncover 37 serious security flaws within OS X itself.

That’s nonsense. Internet Explorer has way more vulnerabilities, and most of them are classified as critical, whereas the bugs in Firefox are usually pretty harmless.

Besides, Norton isn't exactly the gold standard anymore. If you check what Secunia—the folks who actually find the most holes—has to say, they're likely the ones who know best.

They provide data on how many flaws fall into each category, so just look at the numbers.

While Internet Explorer shows 14% as extreme, Opera might show 71% as moderate—meaning there aren't any serious issues there, and moderate is two levels below extreme.

So, I’d suggest not falling for the marketing hype.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if those idiots shut this whole thread down or just ban you simply because you dared to poke a hole in their precious "holy" Firefox (and let's be real, the whole Open Source cult in general!). Seriously, the Open Source fanatics on this forum are more hardcore than anywhere else I've ever seen, and they straight-up nuked my previous thread about this: Wait a second! So, you better watch your step so you don't end up on the blacklist of these total jerks, because you might start getting harassed, just like how they hunt me down, ban me, and kill my threads just because they can't handle someone having a different opinion! 👎

That isn't how this works. Internet Explorer might have fewer holes, but the reality is that nobody wants to waste their time writing exploits for Firefox because its user base is too small; it just isn't an attractive target.

If I were designing a virus, why would I bother targeting something used by a single neighborhood when I could go after a program used by, say, a billion people? Why deal with the headache of attacking a niche product when the real money is in the mass market?😉

So, can we all agree that despite its flaws, Firefox is actually the safer bet since nobody seems to be exploiting those bugs?
Firefox is secure, while IE just isn't.
