The Brothers Grimm (by Terry Gilliam)

Just finished watching... It’s not bad if you just want some mindless entertainment. Honestly, I don't think Gilliam was even aiming for anything profound here. 😁

At first, the whole thing felt pretty lightweight, especially when I saw Gareth from The Office 🙏 popping up alongside that over-the-top Italian guy, Cavaldi.
Later on, once the plot shifts into that haunted forest, the movie takes a darker turn. In my opinion, that part is actually handled better—it almost feels like a legitimate horror flick.
The trees and that little village feel a bit fake, though; they look almost like a cheap plastic set just dropped into the middle of nowhere.
But I suspect that’s intentional. It keeps the visuals from clashing too hard with the film's overall goofy tone. If the setting were too realistic, there would be this weird disconnect between the silly dialogue and the environment. 😁

As it stands, everything has this strange, twisted sort of charm.

What a total waste of two hours...

I don't think the movie is all that bad, though it doesn't quite reach the heights of some of Gilliam's other work...
It’s a bit of a letdown, honestly, but there are still moments where it manages to be pretty fun...

Has anyone actually sat through this movie?
In my estimation, the experience was somewhat... underwhelming. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it left me feeling unsatisfied. That being said, there were a few clever touches throughout. For instance, I found the way their backstory was woven into the narrative to be quite effective.

What an absolute train wreck of a movie!
I honestly felt like they just threw random scenes in there solely to pad out the runtime and hit a certain length...
After sitting through that, even "Prime Love" actually seemed decent by comparison—yeah, it really is that bad...
It reminds me of how my mom used to tell me, "Son, you should probably listen to what your buddies say before you decide to head to the theater"...

I sat through this movie, and while it wasn't quite horrific enough to prevent me from finishing the first disc, it was certainly tedious enough to make me lose interest before the second one even started.

Whenever I find myself more entertained by the side characters—regardless of how bizarre they might be—than by the hollow protagonists, I know the filmmaking has gone south. In my opinion, Matt Damon and Keith Ladger are essentially nothing more than non-entities in The Brothers Grimm. Seeing them on screen feels less like watching actors and more like staring at a smudge on the lens.

Rangerica bears a striking, perhaps overly deliberate, resemblance to Keira Knightley in King Arthur. In fact, when I first saw her stills from the film, I genuinely mistook her for Keira Knightley herself.

Monica Bellucci is criminally underutilized here, much like her role in The Matrix.

The highlights for me were definitely Peter Stormare, playing a delightfully unhinged Italian stutterer (I don't care if some find him grating; I found him brilliant), and Jonathan Pryce as the French general attempting to make his occupation of the German province somewhat tolerable—that sequence involving the noble banquet and the mirrors was quite clever.

All things considered, it was a mediocre experience.

It’s a solid flick; I actually own the original DVD and even grabbed a digital copy in 720p.

I’d say it sits right up there with Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)—honestly, both are just okay, maybe a solid 5/10, though I think I have a bit more of a soft spot for The Brothers Grimm (2005).

I’ve actually sat through "The Brothers Grimm" three times now; first back in '07 watching it on DivX, then I picked up the physical DVD in 2010 and gave it a second go, and my third viewing was just last year when I tracked down the 720p version, so who knows, maybe a fourth watch will happen before this year wraps up!
