The first one is kicking off in early September, around the 3rd or 4th, when UFC hosts a submission tournament
followed by another one at a local MMA gym on October 22nd.
I’m hoping to see everyone out there for both events!
It’s honestly great to see this scene finally starting to gain some real traction here in the States.

It's really great to see this scene slowly starting to grow.

Look, if my sparring partner doesn't flake on me and I manage to sharpen my skills a bit after the summer lull, I might just show up.

I was digging through Google UFC looking for some submission wrestling stuff and stumbled on this link. Let me dig it out and send it over to you. Thank God it’s not one of those sketchy sites full of viruses lol, my bad again!

Here you go: www.erikpaulson.com/ And just a heads up, it’s not the one with a K—it's UFC. My bad, I've probably messed that up a hundred times already! Sorry about that!

Erik Paulson is basically the right-hand man to the legendary Dan Inosanto—and if you aren't familiar with his pedigree, he’s a former Shooto world champion who has coached heavy hitters like Josh Barnett (a former UFC Champion) and the UFC Legend Ken Shamrock. The guy has shared mats with just about everyone who actually matters in the grappling world—think Rickson Gracie, Gerard Le Bell, and the rest of those icons—which is probably why so many people refer to him as a walking encyclopedia of ground fighting techniques. On top of all that, Erik also instructs in Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Kali under Dan Inosanto, picks up Muay Thai from Ajarn Chai Sirisute, and studies Shootwrestling with Yoriyuki Nakamura... honestly, he’s a total combat sports gem, and I suppose he serves as living proof that traditional martial arts and modern combat sports can actually coexist without any friction.
p.s.
My own BJJ instructor, Kazeka Muniz, is actually a friend of Erik's; they used to train together back in the day, and Kazeka has always spoken about him as a true master and just an incredibly cool person to be around.

Alright... I finally got the link right and grabbed some videos from there. Honestly though, I’m not really feeling all that circus stuff—just people bashing heads and blood everywhere (I know, people love that crap). But the ground game? Yeah, I'm into that. That Judo style, actually more like Jujutsu, and the throws are killer. Throwing someone over your hip from the clinch, like a Koshi Nage, is pure art. It's all about speed and technique. 👍

Anyway, thanks regardless... I definitely don't want to be spitting out teeth after every single session. I haven't got that kind of cash to waste on the dentist! 😁

Regarding the whole tooth loss thing—it’s honestly not quite as black and white as you're making it out to be. The reality is that injuries can happen in just about any discipline; I actually know a few guys who ended up needing dental work after training nothing more than standard, "traditional" karate.
In my view, it really all comes down to how the training is structured—specifically the person running the sessions. If you have a qualified instructor who actually understands their responsibility to protect their students, things are different. Not everyone is aiming to be a professional fighter, so I suppose training programs should be tailored to reflect that distinction.
At the end of the day, you can definitely train this style with very minimal risk or even no injuries at all, believe me.

I totally get that, but honestly, hitting both Judo and Aikido sounds like an absolute blast. It's such a killer combo since they both trace their roots back to ju-jutsu. Same goes for BJJ—those Japanese masters brought that whole vibe over to Brazil. Check out this site and let me know if you think it's legit http://www.daito-ryu.org/

I've been looking into this, but I don't really have any idea what to expect—do you happen to have any clips or videos I could watch just to get a sense of how it actually looks in practice?

At the end of the day, you can train this stuff with very few injuries, if any. Believe me.

👍
Absolutely. I spent a brief stint doing Jiu-Jitsu, and even when things got rough or physically intense, nobody walked away with a serious injury. Compare that to the years I spent doing Ki-Aikido... I honestly don't know if I've ever seen more torn ligaments or nasty bruises. I've even seen people walk away with snapped collarbones. It really just boils down to one thing: whose hands you're in.

Man, it’s tough finding stuff online since we're talking about some super old-school ju-jitsu schools. There aren't many clips floating around the web, but you can grab a DVD over at the Aikido Journal here: http://www.aikidojournal.com/ Check out the DVDs by Katsuyuki Kondo Sensei. You can even find some preview shots on the Daito Ryu website. 👍

Who's next on the list?
I was supposed to be facing Reljic, but what's the deal now? Who is this new opponent?

#6 Damir Mirenić (American) vs. Slaven Planinic (Canada)

😲 😲 😲 😲
I honestly don't think there’s any point in even debating who won this one.
Sure, Mirenić took home the title at the first American sub-wrestling tournament, but let's be real—he's still incredibly green in this specific arena. I mean, I've heard he's actually quite seasoned and solid when he steps into a boxing ring, but here? He's got a massive amount of catching up to do.

Man, you haven't seen Mirenić in an MMA ring yet.
And honestly? You probably haven't seen Slaven either. 😉

Well, I might be off base here—and hey, I’m certainly capable of being wrong—but I have heard things about Slaven.
