The Beatles - Tom Waits of Russia at Aquarius on July 4th

The Beatles are arguably the most iconic group out of St. Petersburg. Formed back in 2001 as a trio, they draw their entire creative DNA from the work of Tom Waits. Their discography currently boasts three studio albums—"Being Tom Waits," "A Little Bit of Death, a Little Bit of Love," and "Paris Seasons"—alongside a legendary collaboration with Tom Waits himself.

In Russia, they are a massive club attraction. The lineup features frontman, vocalist, and bassist Billy Novik—whose gravelly vocals are a dead ringer for Waits—alongside harmonica player Anton Matezius and guitarist Andrei Matezius. Novik describes their sound as "funeral Dixieland with an endless happy ending," blending apocalyptic Tom Waits-style blues with gritty street romances. They are known for intense, theatrical live shows, having even delved into musical theater with productions like "Blues in my Heart" and "Being Tom Waits."

Beyond their three albums, they composed the soundtrack for the black comedy "Night Trader." They are currently working on a new record titled "A Postcard from," largely because fans keep telling them that their records don't do justice to the raw energy of a live set. When they play, they bring a sense of community and grit that defines every show. They are a powerhouse at home and have even conquered Paris. Frontman Billy Novik actually walked away from a career as a pathologist just to commit to the band and the relentless touring schedule. I’d honestly go if it wasn't for all this obnoxious propaganda—it's basically just some Russian Tom Waits tribute act🙂 acting like they're the official cover band for the man himself and all that nonsense🙂 .....it's like trying to go see a concert by Nutella😁

says so right there. It just mentions they played with him and collaborated on projects after starting out as a cover band. But obviously, you can hear the influence of Waits in their original stuff.

And who knows—maybe they'll be joined on stage by The White Stripes, assuming they decide to swing by Aquarius later that night 😁👍

I’m sure they’re good, but calling The Beatles "the Russian Tom Waits" is just a total disaster. They really should have run that by a linguist first...😁

Right? KSET has their own sound system—they've got the plane and the hotel covered just from the door sales, don't they? It's a different story over at Aquarius; unfortunately. If our only expense was the band's fee, the entry would be $8.25😁

I’m not really feeling this Tom Waits guy... honestly. When I downloaded the MP3s from his site and gave them a listen, my first thought was—it sounds like some weird, Russian version of a classic bluesman 😎

What’s wrong with calling them the 'Russian Tom Waits'? 😕 When I first heard them, I honestly thought Tom Waits was singing in Russian. It’s brilliant marketing—if they had just been billed as some "Russian act heavily influenced by Tom Waits," they wouldn't have grabbed half the attention they did.

I feel like I'm looking for some kind of Chinese Tom Waits. Is there actually a band out there like that?😁

He’s still basically Tom Waits—but that "TOM WAITS BAND" nonsense in the poster subheader is just terrible... as if Marc Ribot and Greg Cohen were actually in the lineup...
