Rebel Without a Cause

Just finished watching it. Thoughts? It feels like they don't make movies like this anymore—or maybe they try, but we just don't have the next James Dean or those other heavy hitters who carried this one.

It’s a fine film, though perhaps a bit overrated. It reminds me of that line in Dreamers: "Godard said—Nicholas Ray is cinema," and so on.
As for James Dean, I find East of Eden more compelling, while Natalie Wood’s best work is West Side Story. Rebel Without a Cause offers a decent look at the generational divide, but it feels somewhat dated.

Correction. I made a rather glaring error earlier. 😁 In my view, Natalie Wood's finest work is actually "The Searchers".🙏

The film is exceptional—the protagonist essentially serves as the blueprint for every rebel archetype that emerged throughout the latter half of the 20th century.

They just don't make them like that anymore, and even when they try, it's a real struggle to actually reach an audience
I wouldn't say the acting is the issue, per se. I guess it’s more that nobody seems willing to gamble big money on a project where the return on investment is such a question mark
Plus, it feels like directors have become a bit too reliant on technology these days
