Vera Drake

...Leigh’s latest flick covers Vera Drake, a woman performing abortions in 1950s London... there's a lot of truth to be found there... but you have to hand it to Leigh, England in his movies is never exactly a vacation destination....
On top of that, he put together the best onscreen couple I've seen in a while... Reg and Ethel 😍 , and honestly, he captured the most heartbreaking Christmas I've ever seen on screen... just my two cents :-) *

I am firmly convinced that no Hollywood starlet could ever snatch an Oscar away from the actress portraying Vera Drake

Watched it last night.
A total Leigh film.
Nobody else can nail that heavy, dark, suffocating atmosphere without making it feel pathetic. He just gets it.
It wasn't just Vera Drake, the whole cast was incredible.
Man.
The son and daughter too.
And Reg, man... Reg is a genius. This is the best Christmas of my life, haha. Not.

I saw Sid in All or Nothing before. I knew Leigh would eventually snag him for a bigger role.

I can't say I truly believed he spoke without thinking, though.
Rather, don't you think he did it quite deliberately to lift everyone's spirits... yet isn't that precisely what makes it so devastating when the reality sets in and everything feels even heavier?

Whether it was intentional or not, half the theater lost it. Everyone was cracking up. :-)

Of course he didn't think it through. He meant it, too. It's his perfect Christmas. He just didn't stop to consider what that same Christmas looks like for everyone else. 🙂

When I saw it, at least 15 people laughed.
I couldn't believe there were actually that many people.

Otherwise, it's an excellent film; Vera Drake blew me away, especially in the second half.
Actually, the entire cast was superb, which doesn't happen often—not even in Hollywood movies.

When I saw it at the theater, it was just an elderly lady, one film critic, two random people, plus my friend and me. 😁
