Steven Spielberg

I did a quick scan through the threads, but I couldn't find much regarding this director—maybe there’s something buried somewhere, but I’m still pretty new to this forum.

So, he has a new film coming out soon, The Magician. To be honest, Master and Commander left a bad taste in my mouth, but I can't completely write him off—he's responsible for some of my all-time favorites, like Gallipoli, Witness, Fearless, The Truman Show, and Coca-Cola in Paris (if I'm remembering the title correctly).

Anyway, figured I'd start a thread...

You didn't even mention his only two truly great films 🙂
Hanging Rock and The Last Wave... he basically sold out in the eighties and went downhill fast—though I’d be lying if I said "The Truman Show" wasn't a charming piece of filmmaking 🙂

Regarding Spielberg, sure, he definitely chased the money at one point, but I caught him on a talk show recently and watched a bit
If only today's Hollywood blockbusters had even 5% of that kind of soul...
(I think Witness was actually one of the biggest hits of that year)

Good grief, "Dead Poets Society" ?? It's honestly the only movie that has managed to make me cry three separate times.

This is one of those films you just have to see. And then watch it again...

I don't want to get carried away here, but if you aren't counting everything Spielberg did before Mosquito Coast—and sure, we can all agree he made a masterpiece with Dead Poets Society...

Things after the 80s are a bit more debatable, I guess. A great director stays great, but that doesn't mean every single thing they touch turns out to be a hit. For me, Master and Commander was actually pretty good, mostly because I just have a soft spot for those kinds of seafaring movies, but it isn't exactly a cinematic landmark.

Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously, along with Witness, are easily in my top 50 films of all time.
They’re just incredibly smart, complex movies that handle the clash of different cultures in such a phenomenal way.

I think Spielberg might have been the very first director whose name I actually recognized.

Back in the late eighties, there was this television series that ran all of his films—and right before that marathon, they’d air these special segments where critics would really dive into his style and what makes him tick.

Man, they just don't make programming like that anymore. 😁

Green card. He did such an exquisite job editing that scene where Robert De Niro plays the piano.
I’ve always viewed him as the Australian equivalent to Mike Nichols.
Even though almost all of his work was shot right here in the States.
He consistently produces clever films, if you want to call them movies with a message.
